Health By Motorbike

Health By Motorbike Health by Motorbike delivers basic health education, services and equipment to women and adolescent girls living in remote areas of Kenya.

Using professional health workers - and steady drivers - we reach communities that have no nearby services of their Background/History

Several years ago, Dr. Araceli Alonso and her daughter Sofía Noguera began participating in a pen pal program, through which she started a friendship with two women in remote villages in Kenya. In the summer of 2009, while working in Uganda, she visited Kenya and

tried to find their pen pals Mariamu and her daughter Peninah. After meeting with them and spending time with the women in their villages, Dr. Alonso discovered that the women had many basic questions about women’s health and that they suffered from illnesses easily preventable with basic health care and basic knowledge; “Health by Motorbike” was born. Dr. Alonso is an Associate Faculty for the Department of Gender and Women's Studies and the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In order to simultaneously benefit the women from the villages and her own students at UW-Madison, Dr. Alonso created a Service-Learning program in which the students first receive training at UW-Madison and eventually share their knowledge by training the women in the villages through intense summer health camps. Since the summer of 2010, the students and Dr. Alonso have been training community health workers in the villages of Kenya to make the health projects sustainable and owned by the people in these communities.

In 2019, the HbAM programs incorporated quality STEM education for High School girls in thirteen villages of Kwale County. A team of UW grad and undergrad students introduced a commercially available, affordable, and portable paper microscope (foldscope) to deliver basic science education to women and girls
Our goal is to further train secondary-school girls in community health and science to achieve the following objectives:

1️⃣ Increase long-term interest in science and build confidence in science subjects in school;
2️⃣ Increase pursuit of science careers after undergoing a simplified process of scientific discovery, by studying soil using the foldscope, observing soil microorganisms, and isolating antibiotic-producing bacteria;
3️⃣ Introduce health care careers and ways to pursue them;
4️⃣ Deepen the knowledge of community’s needs and barriers to obtain good health.

Using all possible means, our goal is to create change from within communities to improve health outcomes, particularly for the wellbeing of women and girls in the Global South. We do this through three main objectives:

1️⃣ Provide long-term health training and community health outreach for women and adolescent girls in rural and isolated geographical areas and at-risk communities.

2️⃣ Train women and adolescent girls as community health workers to collaborate with local governments.

3️⃣ Use academic knowledge, community engagement, and human capital to achieve health promotion and sustainable development from within.

Health by All Means ( ) is a program founded in 2015 by Dr. Araceli Alonso at the University of Wisconsin-Madison with the assistance and support of students and colleagues. This program originated in 2009 as Health by Motorbike, a 501(c)(3) organization devoted to bring public health nurses and basic health services to remote villages in Kenya via motorbikes. The project expanded in 2010 to include a community engagement component for student internships. In 2013, its innovative work was recognized with a United Nations Public Service Award for Gender, Health and Development. HbAM is currently part of the UW-Madison 4W Initiative (Women, Wellbeing in Wisconsin and the World: https://4w.wisc.edu/), working in close partnership with its Kenyan counterpart and its local Director Bendettah Muthina Thomas. We also collaborate closely with the Swedish organization

INVESTING IN PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT: More sewing machines for the tailoring school have meant more opportunities for the girls to create their own businesses, and fewer chances to get trafficked to the cities to work in the s*x industry.
