Stablecoins are moving from a niche crypto conversation to a serious strategic discussion for credit unions.

As regulation evolves and experimentation accelerates, leaders are being challenged to think differently about deposits, payments, member relationships, and the future of money movement.

In our latest blog post, Filene Fellows Dr. Henry Kim and Dr. Lamont Black explore five strategic questions credit union executives and boards should be debating right now, including:

• Is the main impact from stablecoins on credit unions, “deposit leakage,” or is that risk overstated?
• Do stablecoins meaningfully change the U.S. payments game, or are they mostly a back end change that won’t move consumer behavior?
• For credit unions, is the best posture “wait and integrate later,” or “participate early to avoid being disintermediated”?
• How should boards balance investments in instant payments vs. building stablecoin capability?
• How do stablecoins represent both a disruptive risk and strategic opportunity for credit unions?

The goal is to help credit unions prepare for multiple scenarios while staying focused on member trust, governance, and long-term competitiveness.

As your credit union looks towards strategic planning season, which of these five questions will be a key part of those discussions? Explore the full blog post here:

What’s actually driving growth at high-performing credit unions right now? 📈

At EDGE 2026, Filene CEO Mark Meyer broke down why growth matters, which organizations are growing and why, and what high-growth credit unions have in common.
He also shared three research-backed opportunities credit unions can’t afford to ignore: building the right tech stack, developing compelling financial tools, and leveraging marketing and data to reach and retain members.

If you attended, what resonated most with you from Mark’s session? Drop it in the comments. 👇

Three payment topics that are on every credit union CEO’s mind right now: RTP/FedNow, Tokenization, and Stablecoins. Stablecoin market capitalization reached $317 billion as of Q1 2026, representing more than 50% growth since early 2025.

The reality is that:
• Half the room can’t cleanly define them.
• The other half disagrees on what to do about them.
• Members are about to ask anyway.

None of these are crypto conversations, they’re settlement infrastructure conversations. They change how money moves, how fraud works, and where your credit union sits in the transaction.

Join us 5/21 (11CT) for a member-exclusive session built for credit union leaders, not engineers. We’ll cover:

• The current state of the payments landscape including the major opportunities and challenges for credit unions today
• A deeper understanding of stablecoin fundamentals and an update on the GENIUS Act
• Key strategic recommendations and next steps for preparing your credit union for what’s ahead

This is your opportunity to get up-to-date, get fully informed and prepared for what’s next in payments to help guide your strategic plans. Register using the link in bio!

Payments are changing faster than most strategic-planning cycles. Real-time rails, digital wallets, tokenization, AI-enabled payments and fraud, stablecoins, and new forms of money are reshaping how members expect to move, manage, and protect their money.

Filene Fellow, Dr. Henry Kim, is heading to EDGE 2026 (May 12–14 | Dallas, TX) to lead a panel discussion with credit union leaders on how to separate signal from noise as real-time rails, digital wallets, AI-enabled payments, tokenization, and stablecoins reshape how members move and manage their money.

More adults under 30 turn to social media for financial advice (42%) than to traditional financial advisors (27%). Often times this advice comes from finfluencers who are entertaining and relatable but, in many cases, completely unqualified.

Gen Z wants trustworthy guidance and your credit union is built to provide it.

Filene's latest report gives best practices on what other banks and CUs are doing. We analyzed over 270,000 social media posts across credit unions, banks, digital natives, and top finfluencers to reveal what performs best and how storytelling, humor, and short-form video build real engagement with the next generation of members.
