You might hear the term “child care desert” in the news and mentioned by experts. But, what does that mean exactly? A child care desert is any census tract with more than 50 children 5 years old that has either no child care providers or so few options that there are more than three times as many children as licensed child care slots. In short, it’s an area where families will find it extremely hard to find care – in Wisconsin, about 54% of the state is considered a child care desert.
