Tomorrow morning marks one month until election day, and with the second and final debate of this campaign cycle over, it’s once again crunch time. We need all the volunteers and enthusiasm we can get out talking to voters and making sure they know what we need to fight for. A few of those things are:
A thriving economy. Real wage growth has, for the 20th straight month, remained positive. This, in combination with 254,000 jobs added in September alone means it looks to be a market for labor at the moment.
Immigrant rights and dignity. During the Vice-Presidential Debate, as one would expect, Vance pinned many of America’s perceived problems on immigrants. Specifically, he blamed immigrants for drugs and pushing Americans out of the workforce, but are they? According to an NPR fact check of the debate, migrant labor is actually propping up the economy by making up for lost labor to retirement, as well as filling vacancies we don’t have the enough workers to support. In terms of drug smuggling, migrants—especially those who come here illegally—are far from the problem. A staggering 90% of illicit fentanyl, the specific drug mentioned by Vance, is brough into the US via border checkpoints, with only 0.02 percent—two in ten thousand—illegal immigrants seized at the border having fentanyl on their person.
As always, reproductive rights. Talking about it is fatiguing, I know, but it’s still true that a staggering 85% (Gallup), or, if you prefer, 63% (Pew) of Americans favor legal abortions. As such, Kamala Harris has made clear that if she is able to get the chance, she will codify Roe as soon as it hits her desk. Walz did it in Minnesota before any other governor, and now he and Harris want to do it for all Americans.
