Calling all dog owners / walkers! UW-Madison researchers want to study what you and your pup experience on neighborhood walks.

The “Our Neighborhood Walk” study, led by UW-Madison’s Geography Department, is looking for Elvehjem neighbors to participate in a dog walking research project that uses GPS tracking and interactive story maps to explore how humans and dogs experience our shared environment together.

To participate, you need to be 18+, own a smartphone with a camera, and walk a dog regularly.

The study involves three steps: a short background questionnaire (10 min), a data-collecting walk in your neighborhood (up to 1.5 hours), and a follow-up questionnaire where you’ll review a personalized interactive map of your walk (30 min).

A quick update on the water main rehabilitation project we shared earlier: the Madison Water Utility has awarded the contract to Fer-Pal, the contractor who will be completing the work on Woodvale Dr/Ferris Ave, Marg St, and Meredithe Ave/Timothy Ave.

If you’re in the affected area, watch your mail in the next few weeks for another notice from the Water Utility with more details on construction timing and what to expect.

Water pipe construction coming to Elvehjem this summer. 🔧

Madison Water Utility will be rehabbing water mains on several streets in our neighborhood from June 22 into October.

Affected streets (see map): Woodvale/Ferris (from Acewood to Eldorado), Marg, Meredithe/Timothy (from Acewood to Eldorado)

The good news: this project uses a technique called Cured-in-Place Pipe which lines the inside of the old pipe rather than digging up the street. This means less disruption than a traditional replacement, with results lasting 50+ years.

A few things to know for neighbors:

- Street parking will be eliminated along work zones during the project.
- There will be brief, off-peak closures to thru traffic.
- Homes directly on the affected mains will be connected to a temporary above-ground water system while work is underway. That system is tested and safe.
- No assessments or fees for residents.
- Work hours are 7am-7pm Monday through Saturday, 10am-7pm Sunday.

Heads up, neighbors. MMSD released its first draft of new elementary school attendance boundaries this week, and Elvehjem is in the mix.

The district is considering building a new school near Sprecher Rd, which would pull a portion of Elvehjem’s attendance area. If that school isn’t built, the alternative could push Kennedy Elementary’s overcrowded area into Elvehjem’s boundaries instead.
