CANYON STORIES:
Woman in the mirror

CAN YOU IMAGINE NOT KNOWING WHAT YOU LOOK LIKE?

On a visit to our Canyon Scholars students, Communications Director Todd Svanoe and Student Director Nancy Chacon met this Tarahumara woman a day before an international race she’d come to see, hosted by her world-famous Tarahumara people at the bottom of the Copper Canyon.

When she approached us, shame on us, we assumed she was seeking a handout. Instead, she asked if we would both take a picture of her and print it, since she didn’t have any photos of herself.

We thought this was reasonable, so Todd took the photo, and we set off to have it printed.

On the way, we learned this 70-something woman had walked for two days over the rugged mountains that surrounded us (in sandals, and on 11 toes, we noticed) to get to this festive event! A classic Tarahumaran.

But more striking was, a bit later, when she looked at the printed photo and said, “That’s not me!” as though we were trying to trick her. But Nancy said, “No, look!”, pointing out that the clothes she was wearing matched the ones in the picture.

Suddenly she lit up, surprised, but acknowledging it. Still, at first, we were stumped. Then it dawned on us, having been through a few spartan Tarahumara dwellings, that she didn’t own a mirror, and had likely not looked at herself in years!

We thought, “Gosh, what would life be like freed from any visual self-consciousness?

If we worried that much less about our appearance, would we be that much more attentive and available to those around us? How much of a me-first life results from a daily first look in the mirror?

BREAKING NEWS!

Join us in celebrating these 6 incredible Rarámuri (Tarahumara) women who placed 3rd in The Speed Project. They are the first group of Rarámuri women to ever complete this strenuous 340-mile ultramarathon, from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. They completed the entire race while wearing their traditional huaraches and colorful garments. Congratulations to Veronica Palma, Yulisa Fuentes, Isidora Rodríguez, Lucía Nava, Rosa Para, and Ángela Orpinel!

Follow along as we introduce every week new Tarahumara candidates for educational sponsorship. Please visit https://canyonscholars.org/ for more on how Canyon Scholars (CS) has helped over 300 young Mexican leaders graduate from high school -- and over 100 more from college -- to advance their lives and those of their families while serving as vital contributors to their impoverished communities. From middle school and up, CS is there to help provide the means by which to further education for eager and devoted Tarahumara learners. Why not become a sponsor yourself, today?

Just over the U.S. border, we have been planting hope amid drug-traffic violence for 22 years. Scholarships from 130 Americans have helped 300 young Mexican leaders graduate from high school and 110 from college as nurses, doctors, teachers, and lawyers who are replacing drug cartel activity with re...

Hello everyone!

As we transition into the National Month of Giving, please consider helping us at Canyon Scholars. Our educational scholarships have put 135 of the most talented, yet poorest kids in NW Mexico though college! These kids work hard to make life better for their communities. Only $21/mo. gets the next one started!

Also, for those who can afford a larger gift, $200-1,000 gifts allow us to provide 1) teaching and law licenses to our graduates, 2) greatly needed mentor/tutors to 3 kids at a time, and 3) pay our first Canyon Scholar as Alum Associate Director! You can make an incredible difference in liberating these kids from their drug war-doiminated region.

HILARIOUS STORY from one of our Swedish student sponsors:

A Norwegian, a Swede, and a Czech were going hunting one November when they ran into a pair of bears. They all started running, but one of the bears caught the Czech and ate him whole. The other two didn’t stop running until they came to the ranger station.

The forest ranger grabbed his gun and the three went back to where the two Bears were still standing. The Ranger asked, “ which bear ate your friend?”

The Swede thought it was the mama bear, but the Norwegian insisted it was the papa bear. The Ranger shot the Papa bear, and the mama bear ran off. When they cut it open, the Papas stomach was empty.

The moral of the story is:
Never believe a Norwegian when he says the Czech is in the male.

However, you will be happy to know that I am a Swede, so when I tell you that our check is in the mail, you can believe me. 😂

Another thrill just driving in Wisconsin!

Did anyone see this unusual bank of clouds so nicely outlined by the morning horizon along I-43 this morning? I had to get out of my car for this shot at the Grafton exit. A lovely start to Sunday!
