If his first term was an indicator, a second will prove disastrous. And while he might not win outright, we must assume that he will seek to hold power regardless of the election outcome. He has told us so. Trump’s displayed contempt for democratic norms and institutions, his threat to our democratic rights and civil liberties, is clear. His willingness to subvert or disregard our democracy, regar
dless of how imperfect it is, poses a clear and present danger. The concern goes beyond Trump, of course. After all, during his first term he energized an intolerant right-wing base that will only become more brazen and dangerous if he remains in the White House. In addition to its white supremacist and Christian nationalist core, that base includes elements that are anti-immigrant, anti-foreign, Islamophobic, anti-Semitic, homophobic, anti-choice, anti-union, anti-science, anti-environment, and truly fascistic. It must not win. The threat of a second Trump term, especially one stolen through anti-democratic means, must be countered by massive opposition. Increasingly under attack, the important political and social gains resulting from past struggles and sacrifice must be defended and advanced further, not surrendered.
