This weekend we had a second Quartemaster Cruise, led by Able Scout Katie N. She did an awesome job preparing and executing a Paddlecraft weekend where our Scouts shared their knowledge and passion with 500+ Cub Scouts and Families. The crews had some opportunity to improve their own paddling skills, too, and helped deliver an outstanding program for our Council. We are excited as Katie works to complete her quartermaster journey. Yes, it eventually ends.

This weekend we had our first Quartermaster Cruise, led by Able Scout Ava. Ava did a fantastic job planning, preparing, executing, and adapting to make a fun and memorable weekend. We are so proud of Ava’s growth and can’t wait for her to complete her journey to QM. The weekend included sailing in some very gusty conditions, lots of advancement opportunities lead by both our QM candidates, power boating and anchoring evolutions, movie night, and games.

We were able to get on the water today. The wind wasn’t too heavy, and just light sprinkles. It was a good day to practice sailing in more challenging conditions, and definitely put some high adventure in our program. Fun was had by all!

Despite the heat, we have had several weeks with decent wind. With many new Scouts, we have been using our time since August to work on the US Sailing Level 1 course. I am so proud of the progress of our Scouts over the last 6 weeks or so. Today, all boats rigged, made it out unassisted, sailed for 45 minutes to practice tacking and gybing, returned unassisted, and de-rigged. In coming weeks we start on windward-leeward courses and our own race series in the spring.

The heat has made some challenges for us to get the year going. Despite that, we have added 3 new members in the last two weeks (we’re gonna need a bigger boat…house) 👍🏻. We were able to go on a fun tubing trip on the Strong River today, though. The water was relatively cool and the section was shaded, so it was a great way to spend a hot late summer day!

It is never too late to join the adventure!

Long Cruise 2023, Day 3. The weather mostly cooperated today. After breakfast we spent a few fun hours in the Gulf Surf. A frisbee is indispensable in the water or on land for hours of analog entertainment. And sand is fun to do things with, too. This afternoon we did a Dolphin Cruise. We saw a few dolphins, but a lot of time was spent on navigation (charts and piloting) and learning about AtoN. The evening was games and other fun things the youth came up with. Most slept in until about 7:30 this morning. I am thinking it will be later tomorrow. That is a good thing.
