An Intro to Nonbinary Le****ns

The identity "le***an" was created by and for women who solely love women. In a patriarchal world, le***an and women-loving-women have created vibrant communities that have been crucial in resisting s*xism and other oppressions. With greater awareness of nonbinary people, many le***an spaces are welcoming a broader definition of this identity!

Le***an: a woman or nonbinary person who loves women and / or nonbinary people

This expanded definition includes people who do not solely identify as men who love people who do not solely identify as men. Some women le***ans do have concerns that the inclusion would destroy the spaces that have been havens for women, but inclusion of nonbinary people does not need to be an end to women's le***an spaces. Having spaces for people with the same gender and for different genders are both needed and can occur simultaneously.

You Still Have To Wear A Mask Even if You Are Vaccinated

After you've been fully vaccinated (two weeks after your final dose) you still need to wear a mask, social distance in public and follow other guidelines.

So what changes?

With Other Vaccinated People…

You can gather indoors with fully vaccinated people without wearing a mask or staying 6 feet apart.

If you’ve been around someone who has COVID-19, you do not need to stay away from others or get tested unless you have symptoms.

You can gather indoors with unvaccinated people of any age from one other household (for example, visiting with relatives who all live together) without masks or staying 6 feet apart, unless any of those people or anyone they live with has an increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19

If you travel in the United States, you do not need to get tested before or after travel or self-quarantine after travel.

You do NOT need to get tested before leaving the United States unless your destination requires it.

You still need to show a negative test result or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding a flight to the United States.

You should still get tested 3-5 days after international travel.

You do NOT need to self-quarantine after arriving in the United States.

DISCLAIMER: ALL INFORMATION WAS TAKEN FROM THE CDC WEBSITE.

PLEASE CONTINUE TO WEAR A MASK FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS

Bayard Rustin

Rustin is a known civil rights and LGBTQ+ activist. Rustin worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1953, he was arrested for having s*x with two men in a car. Roughly 60 years later, Governor Newsom pardoned his arrest.

Despite his brief time in jail and the discrimination he faced, he worked on the 1962 March on Washington. He also worked with the Freedom Riders.

Rustin was also alienated because of his previous ties to the communist party. Although many had bias against Rustin, he continued to work for the rights of black and LGBTQ+ people.

In 2013, President Obama awarded Rustin the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He gave the award to Walter Naegle (Rustin's partner of ten years)

I Think I Came Out as the Wrong Identity. What Happens Now?

✨We are all constantly learning more about ourselves
-Figuring out ones gender and s*xuality is incredibly difficult. For most individuals, there isn't a big, flashing sign that points unequivocally toward one particular identity. It is completely normal and valid to realize your identity is different than you first thought. Sometimes, our understanding of our gender and s*xuality grows with us, meaning that our labels change too. This does not mean your prior identity was a "phase" but that all of you has matured with the rest of your self.

✨Coming out again
-Coming out once is difficult enough, let alone needing to share that identity every time you meet someone new or needing to come out with a different identity altogether. As always, it is your choice to come out. From not wanting to deal with another coming out ordeal to being safer as being out as your prior identity, there is no wrong reason to stay in the closet. You can also come out with your new identity to some people and not others!

✨You are not letting down your former communities
-Realizing an identity does not actually fit you is completely normal! Coming out for another time is not letting down your former community. You were not in a "phase" and therefore supposedly harming others in that community, but lived as authentically as you could, which is all any of us can do. Growth is not linear. Peer pressure against folks who do not fit into a clear-cut narrative only forces people into yet another oppressive box.

1: (in Native Hawai'ian and Tahitian cultures) They are third gender persons with traditional spiritual and social roles within the culture

A History of Māhū
Pre-colonial Hawai'ian History
In precolonial Hawai'i, Māhū were priests and missionaries. Although most information was omitted by other missionaries. Māhū was first published in a logbook of Bounty in 1789 when a captain went to Tahiti.
1850's - Hawai'i's first anti-sodemy law is passed
Due to missionaire pressure, Hawai'i passed it's first anti-sodemy law, leading to stigmatization against Māhū. In 1860, similar ideas caused the Honolulu city council to require transwomen to wear a badge to identify themselves as "male."
1920s - In one Tahitian Journal, George Biddle mentions Māhū
He discusses the roles of Māhū, discusses several Māhū friends, and writes about the persecution of a Māhū person, Naipu. He also talks about anti Māhū colonial French laws that send Māhū to prison.
WWII - Māhū met US Military Members
During WWII, Māhū were encountered by US Military Members, and helped influence the beginnings of gay liberation.

Being Nonbinary Doesn't Mean You Need to Look Androgynous

For some reason, many people have the idea that being nonbinary means you need to look entirely androgynous, and if you look more feminine or masculine, you are therefore a woman or man.

This reinforces the idea that you can tell what someone identifies as by how they look, which isn't true. It leads as well, to assuming pronouns based on how you present. A nonbinary person doesn't have to use "they/them," although they can.

You don't have to present 50% feminine and 50% masculine, to be nonbinary. Dress and present however you want, use any pronouns you are comfortable with. Society doesn't pick your identity for you.

Sexist Wedding Traditions We Need to Change Immediately (pt.3)

Wearing a veil: Wedding veil's can mean a lot of different things, so it is important to realize why you are wearing one, and if you want to follow those reasons (it's fine if you do!) In some cases, the history is that the veil wards off evil spirits, or something similar. However, in the past, veils either were to "weigh the bride down" so she couldn't run away, it was meant to be symbolism for a similar thing to being carried over the threshold, or it was to hide the face of the bride so the groom doesn't run away.

Engagement Rings: Engagement rings started out as a way to show "ownership" of a bride. However, it's not hard to change the meaning to you. Instead of only one person wearing an engagement ring, have both people wear one, for a more equal tradition

Women Getting Ready, Men Hanging Out: This one is kind of obvious, but people tend to care more about how women look in weddings then men, so alternatively: if you want to fix your appearance for a lot of the day, you should, but if you'd rather go do something fun with your friends, do that!

Who is Proposing: In most heteros*xual relationships, men propose. Instead of doing this, have a conversation with your partner and say: "we'll propose when we are ready" (if proposals are your thing) and surprise the other! You might just end up with two (or no) rings…

Women Being Forced to Diet: This can be unhealthy, and these ideas are prevalent in our society. Women tend to have extreme body expectations that are typically unachievable. Instead: Don't diet unless it's for health, and be in contact with a doctor if you choose to diet.

It isn't "wrong" for you to do any of these things, but there are certainly ways to make your wedding better if you'd want to. Just knowing the history and thinking "why do I want to do this?" is enough.

Self-Care and Relaxation Options

Taking a Walk
As the weather is getting warmer and warmer, take the opportunity to take a break outside of your house

Hang Out with Family or Friends
There are a lot of virtual opportunities to play games with friends and relax. Chatting with friends and feeling support can brighten your day.

Take a Social Media Break
Social media can sometimes have negative effects on mental health, so taking a break from it can be beneficial.

Reading for Fun
Sometimes reading for school can take over all other forms of reading, but reading a comfort book or something happy can allow a nice break from schoolwork.
