EXPO - EX-incarcerated People Organizing

EXPO - EX-incarcerated People Organizing Who are we? Previously imprisoned women and men lead EXPO. Our members provide support to each other and organize to change Wisconsin’s unjust penal system.

EXPO (EX-Incarcerated People Organizing) works to end mass incarceration, eliminate all forms of structural discrimination against formerly incarcerated people, and restore formerly incarcerated people to full participation in the life of our communities EXPO (EX-incarcerated People Organizing) emerged in 2014 when formerly incarcerated people from around Wisconsin began to gather to discuss what

it would look like to have our own statewide organization. We receive support from family members of currently and formerly incarcerated people and allies who have not experienced incarceration. What do we believe? We believe that those most affected by issues must be involved in decisions about and responses to the issues. We believe that those closest to the problems are closest to the solutions. EXPO’s motto is, “you have the right to NOT remain silent.” We believe in the human dignity of currently and formerly incarcerated people and recognize that they come from and are part of our communities. We believe that men and women with conviction and arrest records should be viewed as human beings, members of families, and assets to communities. What do we do? EXPO is working to transform Wisconsin’s unjust punishment system. EXPO provides a vehicle through which people with conviction and arrest histories can combine our voices, knowledge, and power to be effective advocates for serious reform of our broken justice system. This statewide campaign focuses on mobilizing communities that have been adversely affected by mass incarceration and restoring the civil and human rights of people with records. This campaign also mobilizes the broader community. EXPO provides leadership training to previously imprisoned people who want to become part of the movement for change. Activities of EXPO leaders include giving presentations at local organizations, meeting with elected officials, testifying at public hearings, writing opinion pieces, appearing on radio and television shows, and participating in ROC Wisconsin actions and policy workgroups. Accomplishments

EXPO members have helped to lead campaigns that prompted policymakers to:

• ban the box for federal jobs;
• ban the box for jobs in the City of Madison;
• expand funding for Wisconsin’s Treatment Alternatives and Diversion (TAD) Program;
• reduce the use of solitary confinement in Wisconsin prisons; and
• expand funding for Wisconsin’s transitional jobs program. Future Goals

We are currently fighting to:

• end the practice of imprisoning people for crimeless revocations (the practice of re-incarcerating people on probation, parole, or extended supervision for violating rules of supervision that do not involve new crimes);
• restore voting rights for all formerly incarcerated people; and
• expand eligibility for expungements in Wisconsin. How can you get involved? You can get involved by:

• participating in an EXPO leadership development program;
• asking an EXPO leader to give a presentation to your organization, congregation, or class; and
• making a tax-deductible contribution to EXPO.

Ms. Susan Burton is showing the world how freedom work is done.

Through A New Way of Life, she proved what formerly incarcerated women have always known: people need housing, healing, dignity, opportunity, and community…not more punishment.

Her brilliance and vision continue to shape EXPO’s work, through our S.A.F.E. House and our commitment to creating spaces where women coming home are supported, honored, and reminded they belong.

Ms. Susan Burton did not wait for permission. She built what our communities needed and helped turn reentry into a movement rooted in love, accountability, and liberation.

EXPO is proud to lift her legacy, leadership, and lasting contribution to this work.

Thank you, Ms. Susan Burton, for showing us what freedom, dignity, and sisterhood look like in action.

Sometimes healing looks like support plans, goals, meetings, and doing the hard work.

And sometimes… healing looks like the SAFE sisters absolutely destroying a pizza buffet. 🍕😂

We have all been busy, stretched, and carrying a lot lately, so it felt really good to pause, laugh, eat way too much pizza, and just enjoy each other’s company. No agenda. No pressure. Just sisterhood, full plates, and a whole lot of joy.

For the record: the pizza never stood a chance. 💛

🚗💜 A Gift of Freedom, Opportunity, and Hope 💜🚗

Today, we are celebrating something truly special.

Because of the incredible generosity of one of EXPO’s phenomenal supporters, a S.A.F.E. sister now has a vehicle of her very own to help her and her family travel safely wherever life takes them.

For many people, a car is simply transportation. For women rebuilding their lives after incarceration, it can mean so much more. It means getting to work on time. It means taking children to school and appointments. It means access to recovery, education, groceries, and opportunities. It means independence, stability, and the ability to continue moving forward.

This gift is about more than a vehicle…it is an investment in a woman’s future, her family’s well-being, and her continued success.

To our amazing supporter: thank you for believing in second chances, for showing up with compassion, and for helping remove one more barrier on the road to thriving. Your generosity will have an impact far beyond what can be measured.

At EXPO, we often say that people don’t succeed because they are given handouts—they succeed because someone opens a door, believes in them, and gives them a fair opportunity to thrive.

Today, one more door opened.

Congratulations to our S.A.F.E. sister. We are so proud of you and excited for all the places this journey will take you and your family.

💜 We belong. We deserve to thrive. 💜

This Memorial Day, EXPO of Wisconsin pauses to honor and remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country.

We also hold space for a truth that is too often left out of the conversation: many people who served this country are now incarcerated, returning home from prison, or living under community supervision.

Wisconsin does not appear to publicly report an exact current count of veterans in DOC custody or on supervision. But based on Wisconsin DOC’s current published adult prison population of 23,543 and adult community supervision population of 64,141, and applying national justice-involved veteran prevalence estimates of roughly 5% to 8%, Wisconsin likely has approximately 1,200 to 1,900 veterans incarcerated in DOC custody and approximately 3,200 to 5,100 veterans on community supervision or roughly 4,400 to 7,000 veterans total under adult DOC custody or supervision.

These numbers should move us.

Honoring service means more than remembrance. It means ensuring that veterans who come home from war, incarceration, treatment, trauma, or supervision are not forgotten, discarded, or left to navigate reentry alone.

At EXPO, we believe people are more than the worst thing they have done. We believe healing, accountability, dignity, and belonging must be available to everyone impacted by the justice system.

Today, we remember those who never came home.

And we recommit ourselves to those who still can.

We belong and deserve to thrive.

EXPO is part of a coalition that is working together to create the best possible outcomes in relation to Gov. Evers commutation order and the opportunity to bring home our brothers and sisters who are eligible for commutation. We are thrilled to share this comprehensive video that is a step-by-step guide to complete the application.

She came to S.A.F.E. last July with a heart committed to her future and a deep determination to reunite with her son. Since then, she has done the hard, beautiful work of healing, growing, rebuilding, and believing in herself.

She graduated from S.A.F.E. and moved into S.A.F.E. Family, where she has created a safe, loving home for herself and her son. She is climbing the corporate ladder in hospitality, showing up with excellence, and building a future rooted in stability, purpose, and love.

But what we celebrate most today is who she is becoming: a woman learning to love herself fully and completely, a mother pouring that love into her son, and a sister reminding us all what resilience, grace, and transformation look like.

Happy Birthday, sister!!! We are so proud of you. You are worthy. You are loved. You belong. And you deserve to thrive!!! 🎉💜
