This weekend, the streets of the Motor City will come alive with high-speed action as the Detroit Grand Prix takes over downtown Detroit.

And in August 2029, those same streets will be filled with more than 5,000 of our closest friends as we kick off the 69th Biennial National FOP Conference & Expo!

From race day to conference day, Detroit knows how to bring energy, excitement, and unforgettable experiences. We can’t wait to welcome the Fraternal Order of Police family to the heart of the Motor City in 2029.

Heavenly Father,

As we begin Police Week, we thank You for the brave men and women who serve and protect our communities.
We honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, including the four officers from Michigan whose names have been added to walls this year, and ask for Your comfort over their families. Grant strength, wisdom, and safety to all who wear the badge. May Your peace guide them, and may our communities always show them the support they deserve.

Amen.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the residents of Northern Michigan as they face devastating flooding across the region.

In times like these, we are reminded of the strength, resilience, and unity that bring communities together. We stand with all those impacted—families, first responders, and local officials working tirelessly to keep others safe.

Stay strong, Northern Michigan. You are not alone.

🚨 Friday Fact:
Since 9/11, Michigan’s population has barely moved—but police staffing has dropped hard.

📊 Population:
9.94M → 10.1M (+1.6%)

👮‍♂️ Sworn officers:
22,488 → 18,803 (−16.4%)

🏢 Police positions:
23,150 → 19,108 (−17.5%)

The reality:
➡️ Fewer officers per resident
➡️ ~15–20% less policing per capita

This didn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of:
• Budget cuts after 2008
• Retirements outpacing hiring
• Recruiting struggles
• Policy shifts

Bottom line:
More people. Fewer cops. Less coverage.

This year—back the blue. Vote law enforcement.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Statement from the Michigan Fraternal Order of Police on Kent County Prosecutor’s decision not to charge Grand Rapids Police Department Officers.

The Michigan Fraternal Order of Police strongly supports Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker’s decision not to authorize criminal charges against the Grand Rapids Police Department officers involved in the recent officer-involved shooting.

The loss of life in this incident is tragic, and it should never be minimized. However, the facts in this case are clear. The officers were confronted with an immediate and deadly threat and responded as they are trained and legally required to do. The prosecutor’s review confirmed what the evidence has shown from the beginning: the use of force was justified under Michigan law.

Law enforcement officers are not afforded the luxury of hindsight. They are called upon to make split-second decisions in dangerous, rapidly evolving situations where hesitation can cost lives. When officers are forced to defend themselves or others from a deadly threat, the law is clear, and so is the expectation placed upon them.

We are increasingly seeing officers subjected to intense public scrutiny and premature judgment before the facts are fully known. Charging decisions must be based on evidence and legal standards, not public pressure or narrative. In this case, the prosecutor applied the law correctly and reached the only conclusion supported by the facts.

The Michigan Fraternal Order of Police will continue to stand firmly behind its members when they act lawfully and in the line of duty. Our officers deserve fairness, due process, and the presumption that they are performing their duties in good faith until proven otherwise.

We support these officers, we support the decision, and we will continue to advocate for the men and women who protect our communities every day.

We’re proud to highlight our team’s recent contributions on a national stage. Deputy Labor Director Phil Abdoo, alongside Defender of the Blue Attorney Marc Curtis, presented at the National FOP Legal Seminar in Las Vegas.

Their session focused on in-custody death and legal defense, featuring an in-depth case study of a major incident involving corrections officers charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Their work reflects our ongoing commitment to leadership, education, and strong legal advocacy for our members.
