Our community at Open Table Nashville is mourning the loss of Steve Lindstrom and Georgette Arena who tragically passed away on June 19.

We first met Steve in 2013, and for the past thirteen years, he’s been involved in our outreach and advocacy efforts. He led our winter canvassing teams downtown, served on our board, helped with our Day on the Hill events, and fought against the criminalization of homelessness alongside us.

He attended rallies, marches, and legislative meetings. He risked arrest to stand in solidarity with our friends who were facing unjust displacement, and he maintained long-term friendships with a number of people he met on the streets. Steve also showed up for our staff members and our organization during difficult times and was someone we could always depend on.

Steve was the kind of person who cared deeply about others, showed up, and made things happen. He was driven by a deep sense of spirituality that understood that his liberation was bound up with the liberation of people who are oppressed. Instead of playing it safe or disengaging from struggle, he leaned in. His leadership, friendship, and willingness to live out his deepest convictions made a profound impact on those of us who knew him and the broader community.

We give thanks for the many ways Steve and Georgette supported, encouraged, and accompanied us. We are all better for it and will carry their memory with us in our work.

In our latest blog post, Co-Founder Lindsey Krinks memorializes Steve’s impact on our work in a full tribute: https://www.opentablenashville.org/post/remembering-the-legacy-of-steve-lindstrom

To disrupt cycles of poverty and homelessness, we believe in fighting unjust policies and working for systemic change. That means our advocacy work takes us to courtrooms and council chambers but also the streets, woods, under bridges, and anywhere else our neighbors make a home when there is nowhere else to go.

This work can look like:
🔉Advocating in courtrooms and council meetings.
🔉Pushing for local and state policy changes.
🔉Sharing the stories of our friends being harmed by the systems designed to help.
🔉Empowering people living in camps to fight for their rights.

Our advocacy is only possible through relationships with friends currently and formerly on the streets, community organizations, concerned neighbors, faith communities, and so many others who continue to choose care and housing for all of our neighbors.

There’s still time to support our summer fundraiser that makes it possible to continue this work - head to the link in bio to learn more!

That's why education is one of the three pillars of our work at Open Table Nashville.

Our educational trainings are informed by seasoned outreach and advocacy workers and by people who have experienced homelessness themselves.

Anyone who wants to get involved in supporting their neighbors can sign up for interactive trainings on topics like:

đź“—Trauma-informed de-escalation.
đź“—Local and national advocacy and policy.
đź“—Winter canvassing.

Our street outreach work is made better by the partnerships we have with organizations like !

Since 2024, we've picked up 50 meals every week to share with our friends on the street. Without our partnership, we wouldn't have been able to distribute thousands of nutritious and tasty meals over the last two years.

Like our Street Outreach and Housing Navigator Jess shares, homelessness and food insecurity are oftentimes interconnected, so it's important that we have resources to get our friends the nutritious and tasty meals they need and deserve. We're so grateful to work with an organization that just gets us ✨

Our work is always done alongside community! You can support our summer fundraiser through the link in our bio ➡

We're back with an important update about the recent felony camping arrests of two neighbors experiencing homelessness in East Nashville.

Swipe through for the full breakdown ➡

We're calling on our city leaders to condemn the practice of addressing homelessness with citations, fines, arrests, and prosecution. Nashville must do better.

The foundation of our street outreach work is the community we build along the way. Our outreach team centers the experiences and needs of our friends on the street, so they offer a range of support like distributing supplies, collecting documentation, and supporting the journey to temporary or permanent housing — all while building lasting relationships.

We couldn't do this without our dedicated volunteers and supporters who join us to canvas and provide us with funds and supplies to meet the needs of our neighbors.

You can directly support our outreach efforts this month by making a donation at opentablenashville.org/donate. Every donation in July will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $15,000! Head to the link in our bio to double your impact 🌟
