E-bike crashes are now the leading cause of injury for school-aged children in emergency rooms. Some of these injuries are very similar to injuries seen in motorcycle crashes, like traumatic brain injuries, broken bones and internal chest or abdominal injuries. Back-to-School Bike Safety Alert! 🚴‍♂️📚
If you own an e‑bike or know someone who does this message is for you! Fresno PD wants all riders, especially our young students, to stay safe as they head back to school.
Know your e‑bike laws in California:
• Class 1 & 2: Pedal assist or throttle up to 20 mph. Allowed on most bike paths. Helmets required under 18.
• Class 3: Pedal assist up to 28 mph. Riders must be 16+, helmets required at all ages, and these bikes are limited to bike lanes or streets, not multi‑use paths.
• No license, registration, or insurance needed. Just ride smart and follow the rules.
Safety Tips:
• Always wear a proper helmet
• No sidewalk riding unless permitted
• Be respectful, watch for pedestrians and obey traffic signals
