Is it Safe to Eat Fish in the Keys? 🐟💊
A recent study conducted by Florida International University and Bonefish & Tarpon Trust revealed shocking findings about pharmaceutical contaminants in bonefish throughout South Florida and the Caribbean. 🚨
In the study, researchers found that every bonefish tested contained pharmaceuticals, with an average of 7 different drugs per fish—including common prescriptions like blood pressure medications, antidepressants, antibiotics, pain relievers, and even opioids. These contaminants were present in both urban and remote areas, from Biscayne Bay all the way to Key West. 🌿
This raises an important question: Is it safe to eat the fish we catch here in the Keys?
Join us at Last Stand’s Annual Meeting on February 27th, where Dr. Jennifer Rehage, a coastal ecologist at Florida International University, will discuss her research on water quality, fisheries, and the implications of pharmaceutical contamination in our waters.
