DID YOU KNOW?
The ocean produces at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen?
It is home to most of earth’s biodiversity, and is the main source of protein for more than a billion people around the world.

Let's help protect our oceans together!

Production of single-use plastics is set to grow 30% in the next five years, fueling the contribution to global warming and ocean pollution.

Single-use plastics -- such as face masks, medical equipment, shopping bags, coffee cups, plastic utensils, and cling film -- are made from polymers, which use fossil fuels as a base material.

In 2019, 130 million metric tons of single-use plastics were thrown away around the world, with 35% burned, 31% buried in managed landfills, and 19% dumped directly on land or into the ocean, according to the Plastic Waste Makers Index publication.

What are you doing to reduce your use of plastic waste?

It's bird nesting season here in Northern Indiana. Here's some do and don'ts to help your feathered friends with nesting materials:

Nesting Materials DO's:
-DO make small sticks, twigs and straw available to the birds
-DO leave your grass clippings for the birds

Nesting Material DO NOT's:
-DO NOT put out long strands of yarn, string, or ribbon (They can wrap around baby birds, injuring or killing them).
-DO NOT use dryer lint (It tends to disintegrate in rains and leave holes in the nests of the birds that build with it).
- DO NOT put out any plastic items, such as bags, ties, or fishing lines (They can entangle the birds or be digested).

What are microplastics and why should I care? Plastic is everywhere. Most plastics end up in the ocean. They break up into very small particles called "microplastics" that can be mistaken as food by aquatic life and birds. These plastics pose a threat to animal and human health.

Read more about microplastics and their affect on oceans, wildlife, and human health.

Let's all Reduce, Reuse, Recycle to keep these plastics out of our oceans, our food, and our drinking water!

Did you know?
The United States is the global leader in food waste, with Americans discarding nearly 40 million tons of food every year!

What can you do to address food waste?
1. Learn how to compost to keep food scraps out of landfills, and the amount of greenhouse gases from rising.

2. Freeze food that can’t be eaten immediately, but could be consumed at a later date.

3. Share the wealth-Donate food to food pantries or deliver leftovers to people who may need it.

4. Plan meals and make deliberate grocery store shopping lists.

5. Choose imperfect produce
