The Three Causes of Love - Yusuf Weltch
In this reflection, Yusuf Weltch explores Imam al-Ghazali's explanation that love is rooted in three qualities: perfection, beauty, and favor. We are naturally drawn to what appears perfect, captivated by beauty, and attached to those who show us kindness. The question then becomes: who possesses these qualities in their fullest and most complete form?

Drawing on the Qur'an and the Islamic intellectual tradition, Yusuf Weltch explains why every perfection points back to Allah, every beauty is a sign of Allah's beauty, and every blessing ultimately comes from Allah. He also reflects on how the created world serves as a means of knowing Allah and how the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ embodies these qualities more completely than any other human being.

This reminder is a reflection on the nature of love, what the heart was created for, and how recognizing the source of all perfection, beauty, and favor transforms the way we see the world.

"The heart was created to love Allah."

In Book 28, Imam al-Ghazali addresses two extremely destructive diseases of the heart: love of status and ostentation. Allah Ta’ala states in the Quran: “As for the abode of the hereafter, We grant it ‘only’ to those who do not seek to exalt themselves on earth, nor to spread corruption...” [28:83] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Love of wealth and status is more ruinous to a Muslim’s religion that two vicious wolves in a stable of sheep.”

With respect to ostentation, Allah Ta’ala states, “So woe to those ‘hypocrites’ who pray, yet are unmindful of their prayers; those who ‘only’ show off.” [107:4-6] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ”Verily, the most dreadful thing I fear for you is the minor association of partners with Allah.” When asked what is that, he ﷺ responded, “Ostentation.”

In On Status and Ostentation, we will delve into Imam al-Ghazali’s discussion and treatment of these vices, including among other things, their reality, how they arise in the heart, their cure, and much more.

Every Prophet called people to Allah.

But Allah ﷻ decreed that through the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, more hearts would be guided than through all of the prophets before him combined.

“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.” (21:107)
