Summary: The latest film from the famed Ukrainian director Sergei Loznitsa (My Joy) adapts a novel by Soviet writer and political prisoner Georgy Demidov, set in the Soviet Union in 1937. It follows the attempts of a government-appointed prosecutor (Alexander Kuznetsov) to expose the mistreatment of a dissident Bolshevik writer who has been jailed and tortured without evidence of wrongdoing. As he gradually comes to realize, the lack of cause for the man's imprisonment is hardly unique under Stalin’s regime, and the lawyer may be putting himself in danger by exposing his own righteousness.

Film Threat: - While it looks fantastic, it’s Mehrel’s sharp writing that makes the film stand out. She manages to create a seamless tonal balance between pointed humor and heartwarming personal transformations. Two fantastic performances and an undeniable chemistry between Casar and Mayeri certainly help, too. They’re both individually brilliant, but together they’re absolutely captivating.

Next Best Picture - It takes great skill to navigate the tonal shifts of June and Lela’s relationship, and both women do superb work.

SEEDS summary: Interweaving the stories of three Black generational farmers to create a collective and intimate portrait of farming today, SEEDS is a moving and powerful exploration of their lives, joys, and struggles as well as the fragility of legacy and owning land. Through these inter-generational stories, we see the cycles of inequity and embedded racism that persist to this day, as well as signs of hope and renewal among younger generations of farmers.
