There have been quite a few changes over the years, but we have grown and learned over the years and this is a wonderful club to be part of. We welcome all ham radio operators, whether membership is something you are looking for, or just to meet hams in your area. We strive to make our community better by offering our services and communications expertise to local EMA and Hospitals in the area. I

t feels really good to have some way to give back to our local community. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, then come on down and see what we are all about in person. Strongest flare in a decade . Worth noting but that is not saying much in total. Several flares in recent history had taken down power grids and more. More note worthy is that these flares have been Earth directed and that the surface of the Sun is acting this disruptive on a near solar cycle minimum. Fun part is that Auroras across the Northern continental US might be strong the next day or two.

HAMs > great time to take those VHF antennas and point north and work some long distant stations from Auroral Back Scatter Propagation.

Solar flares occur when the sun's magnetic field twists up and reconnects, blasting energy outward that can cause radiation storms in Earth's atmosphere.

Result of of the solar flare September 6th...
Earth is in the direct path of the flare.

Minor disruptions of the power grid, GPS, satellites and radio propagation expected

Aurora should be enhanced so VHF back scatter propagation will be enhanced (Long distance)

NOW: Significant shortwave blackout occurring right now (12:05 UTC). Solar flare causing this Sudden Ionospheric Disturbance (SID). We are in for a rocky day of ionospheric propagation. We are expecting a geomagnetic storm, as well as flare activity. Additionally, the polar regions are under a proton event. This makes trans-polar propagation nearly impossible.

Stay tuned for more!

Moderate Geomagnetic Storming Forecast
05/16/2017
NOAA forecasters have issued a watch for minor-to-moderate geomagnetic storms May 16-17. Forecasters say there is a 40% chance of minor (G1) geomagnetic storming on May 16, as Earth enters a stream of solar wind flowing from a hole in the Sun’s atmosphere. The storm could intensify to moderate (G2) on May 17, due to a combination of coronal hole activity on the Sun’s surface and the impending arrival of a May 13 coronal mass ejection (CME), which is expected to deliver a glancing blow to Earth’s magnetic field.
The storming could make auroral displays visible at lower-than-typical latitudes. Under G1 and G2 conditions, HF radio propagation can fade at higher latitudes.
