A Look Back at Macon History: The Macon Elks Lodge #999

For more than 120 years, the Macon Elks Lodge has been a part of Macon, Missouri’s rich history.

Organized in 1905 and officially chartered on July 20, 1906, the Macon Elks Lodge #999 quickly became an important part of the community. Its first Exalted Ruler was local attorney Daniel R. Hughes.

In 1922, the Elks constructed their impressive three-story brick building at 212 North Rollins Street, which remains a familiar downtown landmark today. The new lodge celebrated its grand opening in 1923 with five days of festivities, including dances, receptions, musical entertainment, and tours for local schoolchildren!

The Macon Elks also played host to major statewide gatherings, including the Missouri State Elks Reunion in 1911 and another convention celebration in 1927. These events brought visitors, parades, and excitement to downtown Macon.

Inside the historic building are a ballroom, social rooms, lodge meeting spaces, and a collection of memorabilia preserving the organization’s past.

More than a century after its founding, the Macon Elks Lodge continues its tradition of fellowship, charity, and community involvement.

Another wonderful piece of Macon’s history, still standing proudly in our downtown!

Here is the real, new menu ,for The Smoke House. If you have seen a different menu with ginormous prices on it , please disregard it. Someone, it seems wants to hurt our little business before it even opens.
This is our real menu and it took a lot of research and planning into the price of each item.
Monday, October 19th is our opening day. We sure hope to see you all soon.

It’s throwback Thursday!

Today we’re throwing it back to the former train station. 🚉🚂

Macon was once an important railroad junction. Macon's railroad history dates to the 1850s. The Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad connected Macon to an east–west transportation route, while the North Missouri Railroad, later part of the Wabash system, connected it with communities to the north and south.

An early Macon County history states that the North Missouri line reached Macon in February 1859 and that the two railroads shared a Union depot for several years. The arrival of the railroads helped produce a major boom in Macon's development. The former passenger depot stood between Rollins Street and Rubey Street, near downtown Macon.

The depot was eventually demolished after passenger rail service ended.

🚂 April 9, 1968: The last daytime passenger service ended with the discontinuation of the Kansas City Zephyr.

🚂 1971: The overnight American Royal Zephyr was discontinued, ending the remaining passenger service.

Did you ever get on the train at the Macon Train Station?
