Dr. Curtis Jones Named Georgia Superintendent of Year! That’s victory in progress!

Dr. Curtis L. Jones, Jr., was named 2019 Georgia Superintendent of the Year on December 7, 2018, by the Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA). The award was presented during a luncheon at the 2018 Georgia School Boards Association/Georgia School Superintendents Association’s Winter Conference in Atlanta.
Each year, GSSA calls for and accepts Superintendent of the Year nominations from local school boards, Regional Education Service Agencies, business organizations and education colleagues from throughout the state of Georgia. Four finalists for the top honor were announced at GSSA’s Fall Bootstrap Conference in October. Finalists for Georgia Superintendent of the Year were Dr. Curtis Jones, Bibb County Schools; Ms. Samantha Fuhrey, Newton County Schools; Dr. Michael Duncan, Pike County Schools; and Dr. Jeff Bearden, Forsyth County Schools. As Georgia Superintendent of the Year, Dr. Jones will compete for National Superintendent of the Year, to be awarded in February 2019 at The School Superintendents Association (AASA) National Conference on Education in Los Angeles.
“I am thankful and humbled by this recognition. I also know that this selection is because of the great work that teachers, principals and students are doing in the classrooms every day. It is because of the hard work that the senior cabinet and central office do to support school every day. And it is because of what parents and the community have done to support our efforts to increase reading proficiency, improve discipline, and make our schools safe, secure and fun places to be,” Dr. Jones said. Congratulations, Dr. Jones!

Still rewarding good-doers at The Peyton Anderson Foundation.

The organization announced its latest round of grant recipients - 16 community organizations will receive $3.59 million towards place-based projects that benefit the needs of thousands of Central Georgians. This latest announcement caps nearly $7 million in grants awarded by the Foundation to 34 local projects in 2018.

This year’s largest grant is to the Beverly Knight Olson Children's Hospital, Navicent Health. The $2 million grant was announced Monday at the annual “A Night of Lights” tree lighting event at the Hospital. The event was the first time the new hospital tower has been opened to the public, and it was also announced that the new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will be named in Peyton Anderson’s honor.

Other significant funding was awarded to Goodwill of Middle Georgia & the CSRA for “A Hand Up: Goodwill's Campaign for Helms College.” The $500,000 grant will help prepare local residents to fill the 21,280 new middle-skills jobs Macon-Bibb is projected to gain by 2022. Goodwill is embarking on a campaign to strategically expand its own Helms College in alignment with the community’s urgent workforce needs.

Another $500,000 grant will go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Georgia for the “Keeping MORE Families Close” program. This grant will help meet the growing needs of families by adding a new building to double the current capacity by the end of 2019.
