Macon-Bibb County has released its first Complete Streets report, giving us a look at the progress made over the past two years.
The report is an important first step in establishing a baseline for where we are and where we need to go. Nearly 3 miles of sidewalks, 102 new curb ramps, more than 7 miles of bike lanes, transit improvements, and traffic calming projects have been completed since 2024.
At the same time, the data makes clear that there’s still a lot of work to do. Pedestrian collisions and injuries remain too high, and 14 pedestrians and 1 cyclist have already lost their lives this year. Continuing to prioritize these issues and addressing our most dangerous locations will be critical to making our streets safer.
We’re encouraged by the county’s continued investment in safer streets - from putting the East Macon and Gray Hwy project on the commission agenda, a proposed road diet for 3rd Street, to the county-wide sidewalk inventory, to working with GDOT to continue building our trail system. We’re optimistic that the same level of attention and effort being put into the current Paving the Way projects will carry over to future sidewalk and multimodal infrastructure projects.
We also want to acknowledge that this is the county’s first Complete Streets report, and much of the data needed to measure progress wasn’t available before Weston Stroud became MBC’s first Traffic Safety Manager in 2024. We appreciate his work in building this foundation, tracking the data, and moving these important projects forward. We're hopeful that future reports will give us an even clearer picture of progress and establish measurable goals for the work ahead.
