Our office is closed today in observance of Juneteenth. This weekend, downtown Macon has a full slate of events to honor this historic day.

Kick things off tonight with the Real Talk Hip Hop Concert at the Douglass Theatre, then head to Tattnall Square Park tomorrow for the 34th Annual Juneteenth Freedom Festival. Sunday, the Juneteenth parade returns to downtown at 4:30 PM, followed by Jazz in the Courtyard at the Douglass Theatre and fireworks at 9 PM. (Please check organizers' social pages for any weather-related changes.)

Follow the The Douglass Theatre, Macon Black Culture, and Kwanzaa Cultural Access Center, Inc. for full details.

Save the date, fry fanatics. The Downtown Macon French Fry Fight returns July 8-10! 🍟

After you all made it loud and clear last year that three days of fries are better than one, we're officially making it a tradition. For three days, participating restaurants will serve up their most delicious and daring fry creations and compete for the coveted Super Spud award. Will last year's champion, Macon Water Ice, hold on to the title, or will a new contender come for the crown? Your vote decides!

Fry specials will drop Monday, June 22, so you can start planning early. For now, mark yourself as going on Facebook and get your appetite ready!

Tonight, we're having a picnic in Turpin Park, and don't worry- we brought the free popsicles and the fun for First Friday. 🧺!

Check the first photo to see all the to-go specials from participating downtown restaurants. Grab your order, then meet us at Turpin Park on Poplar and Third, where you'll see the musical instruments! Free popsicles, yard games, a live performance from The Basement Club, and a Robins Financial Credit Union raffle for a picnic basket stocked with all the essentials.

And that's just the park! More Soul Spots artists are spread across downtown, bands are playing in our iconic venues, Switch Macon has a patio market, and new art gallery shows are open tonight. Find the full lineup in the link in our comments.

Grab your blanket, and we'll see you out there tonight! ✨

Trails Day is this Saturday, June 6, and there are two great ways to celebrate and support the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail!

First, you can donate. Donations fund new extensions, paved portions, upkeep, and safe bike and pedestrian routes! You can find the donation link in our comments. All donations of any size are welcome.

Second, we're heading to Napier Heights on Saturday for a community cleanup led by amazing community organizations and Napier Heights residents! You can help from 9 AM to 12 PM by meeting us at the Habitat for Humanity parking lot. Groups will depart from there. The trail doesn't reach Napier Heights yet, but the future is full of possibility, thanks to the residents, community members, and organizations already invested in seeing this neighborhood thrive.

We hope to see you on Saturday!

If you shopped at Dot's Forget Me Knots over the years, you already know Dorothy Ridley. She spent 24 years on Cherry Street welcoming anyone and everyone who walked through her door. Now she and her son have opened B&D Event Venue in that same space, and we had the pleasure of using it this morning! πŸ‘

Same address, same warmth, brand new chapter. If you need a space for a private dinner, book club, celebration, or small gathering of up to 40 people, go see Dorothy at 623 Cherry Street. Help us congratulate her on this exciting new venture! ✨

NewTown Macon and Macon+Bibb County are excited to announce Phase I approval for a Recreational Trails Program grant to extend the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail through Riverside Cemetery! πŸŽ‰

This connection has been part of the Trail Master Plan - Vision Plan for years. The project will link the Riverside Cemetery Trail to a future pedestrian bridge connecting to the decommissioned GDOT bridge over the Ocmulgee River, with ADA accessibility, a boardwalk over wetlands, and protections for old-growth trees. πŸ₯Ύ

Want to share your thoughts on this project? Comment below or email [email protected]. πŸ’¬

The Macon Area Transportation Study (MATS) survey in the comments also includes a section for trail input, making it another great way to share your feedback on public transportation planning and investments! πŸš΄β€β™€οΈ
