Looking for something fun this summer that the whole family can enjoy? We have two big family day events right around the corner! Save the date for Bird Day and Reptile Day at the museum! Bird Day is THIS SATURDAY and mark your calendars for Reptile Day next month on July 25th!

06/19/2026

Juneteenth is a day of reflection and celebration as it marks the end of enslavement in the U.S. In observance of Juneteenth, we want to highlight the work of local Macon artist, Wini McQueen.

McQueen is a textile artist whose work explores African American heritage and complex political and social relations. Nationally recognized for her textile art, she has pieces held in the permanent collections of museums across the country and here at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. Featured in the Quilts, Textiles, and Fabric Arts exhibit, her work “Quilt of Names” honors the lives and heritage of the 10 million people who lost their names in the Transatlantic Slave Trade.

Quilts, Textiles, and Fabric Arts is currently on display in Georgia’s Gallery until August 15th.

On June 17, the crescent Moon will move in front of the radiant planet Venus in the daytime sky for observers in the contiguous 48 states, much of Canada, and parts of South America. This is called a planetary occultation. They can only be seen from relatively limited locations on Earth each time they occur because the geometry to line up the Earth, moon, and Venus has to be very precise. The next Moon-Venus occultation visible from North America will occur on October 10, 2029.

According to the International Occultation Timing Association, Venus will move behind the moon at 3:42 p.m. as seen from Macon, GA and the planet will emerge at 5:10 p.m. A link to the times of visibility from other places is in the article below: https://skyandtelescope.org/astronomy-news/see-venus-disappear-in-broad-daylight-on-june-17th

To see it, the sky will need to be clear and binoculars or a telescope are required to see Venus in the daytime. Try to find a location where the sun is blocked by a building or tree. Not only will it be easier to find the moon this way, but you'll also get to enjoy the occultation in the shade.

A representative from the Middle Georgia Astronomical Society will be in the museum's lobby on Wednesday starting at 2:30 p.m. He will offer views of the occultation through a digital telescopes if the sky is clear. If it's not, he'll be showing what the event will look like on sky simulation software. The occultation will also be featured in planetarium shows on Wednesday.

On June 17th, much of North America can watch the Moon occult Venus in the daytime sky. All you need are binoculars.

We are deeply saddened by the news of David Hockney’s passing. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this time.

A prominent figure of the Pop Art movement in the 1960s, Hockney created work with a wide array of media. Most famously known for his drawings and paintings of pool sides, many of his pieces frequently centered themes of presence and absence.

“What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course art is about sharing. You wouldn’t be an artist unless you wanted to share an experience, a thought” - David Hockney
