Strong readers become confident learners, and confident learners have more pathways to success.

Three MVP grant-funded programs are helping Macon-Bibb children strengthen their reading skills at school and at home:

100 Black Men of Macon-Middle Georgia’s A.I.R. 100 initiative is providing structured literacy support at Bruce Elementary School.

Appleton Episcopal Ministries’ Free to Read® program is offering intensive after-school instruction and small-group support.

Lead With Literacy’s Macon Family Time is equipping families with books, guided activities and weekly reading goals.

Literacy is more than an academic skill. It is a foundation for opportunity, confidence and long-term success.

This year MVP awarded sixteen Macon-Bibb based nonprofits community grants to support programs for youth during school breaks. From 100 Black Men of Macon-Middle Georgia’s trip with Bruce Elementary School students to New York City to Girls Dig Deeper Initiative’s Summer in the City program, which included golf instruction from fellow MVP grant recipient First Tee Middle Georgia, to Lead with Literacy’s incredible camps in partnership with Macon-Bibb Recreation Department – we could feel the positive vibes increasing across our community.

In a world where bad news leads, it’s important to remember that there are good people doing excellent work to uplift our next generation. MVP is proud to be part of that work.

“Chicken in Space” helped young readers take flight this summer. 🚀📚

Mayor Lester Miller joined students at Appleton Episcopal Ministries’ Free to Read Summer program for a special story time connected to a lesson on the “sp” consonant blend.

This year’s five-week Take Flight with Reading program served 36 rising first, second and third graders through:

• Small-group literacy instruction
• Daily meals and snacks
• Books to take home: 26 new books per scholar!
• Afternoon enrichment activities

Summer learning helps students maintain their skills, build confidence and return to school ready for what comes next.

What helps a young person make positive choices? Consistent support. Trusted adults. Academic guidance. Opportunities to grow.

Campus Clubs, Inc. brings those elements together through a six-week summer program that combines academic support, life skills, character development and enriching experiences.

Its MVP-supported Pathways to Peace initiative also helps young people strengthen decision-making skills and work through challenges that can affect learning, relationships and safety.

For students at Victory Academy, a summer field trip could be a glimpse into their own futures.

During a visit to Microsoft’s Atlanta headquarters, students had the opportunity to explore a major technology workplace and see where careers in innovation can lead. Sometimes seeing a new path is the first step toward imagining yourself on it. Thank you to all the Victory Academy staff for providing this opportunity and inspiring these young students.

The Family Counseling Center of Central Georgia provides accessible professional counseling and practical support to individuals and families throughout our region. Through its MVP-supported Better U Project, the organization is also helping youth and caregivers address mental, emotional and relational challenges while reinforcing positive behaviors and long-term stability.

Congratulations to Big Brothers Big Sisters Heart of Georgia on receiving a national Growth Award for the second time! 🎉

The award recognizes the organization’s continued success in expanding mentoring opportunities and connecting more young people with caring, consistent adults.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Heart of Georgia received its second national growth award for expanding mentoring opportunities and supporting matches.

Girls Dig Deeper Initiative gave Macon teens an opportunity to learn, lead and prepare for the future during its third annual Summer in the City Learning Experience.

Girls ages 13 to 17 practiced CPR, explored healthcare and STEM careers and participated in activities focused on leadership, personal growth, community service and creative expression.

Summer programs do more than keep young people busy. They help participants build healthy relationships, discover new interests and develop skills they can carry into school, work and adulthood.

MVP is proud to support Girls Dig Deeper and its commitment to helping young women recognize their potential.
