Today, we took six cats on an adventure! Mr Yang, Sq**rt, Happy, Sonny, Gray, and Shadow took a road trip to MU Shelter Medicine where they were neutered and spayed. Shadow, was a bit scared and complained most of the way there. The rest of them were quiet and kept their paws to themselves.

They didn’t get to see much scenery or check out any landmarks in Columbia, but they did get to meet the wonderful people at Shelter Medicine.

They were all happy to be back home after their exciting journey. Their owners, Missy, Catherine, and Diana, welcomed them back and promised them a quiet evening of relaxation while they recover from their surgeries.

Thank you to Jodie Langhammer for bringing the travelers back safely from their trip. Thank you to Shelter Med for caring for them during their visit. And thank you to their owners for sending them on their adventure today.

Another successful trip to MU Shelter Medicine in Columbia! Today’s passengers were Lilith, Sara, and Shadow. The scary day will soon be a distant memory for them, and they will have happier and healthier days ahead. Lilith and Sara won’t have to worry about more kittens to raise and Shadow won’t feel the urge to roam.

And their owner, Missy, will have less stress from caring for more cats. We will be working with her to spay and neuter more in the next couple months to slow down and eventually stop the number of kittens born on her property.

A big thank you to MU Shelter Medicine for their services and to Missy for her commitment to bettering the lives of the cats she cares for! 🐾❤️

😻 It was Ladies Day at MU Shelter Medicine today!!

🐈‍⬛ Ms Kitty, Iris and Salmon all had their spay surgeries and did wonderful. Salmon, the youngest, will never have to worry about being a mom. And Ms Kitty and Iris won’t have to worry having more litters and keeping them safe. We are happy for these three ladies and their owners for choosing to have them spayed.

❤️ Thank you once again to Shelter Med for taking such great care of them and working with our group to help reduce the pet population in our area.

🚙 And thank you to Pat and Natalie Nasi for getting these pretty ladies to and from Columbia. We appreciate you and love all our volunteers!

Today FMCMA took 5 cats (Buffy, Tayla, Clyde, Ally, and Smokey) to MU Shelter Medicine for spay and neuter surgeries. We are grateful to MU Shelter Medicine for providing the services they offer to rescue groups like ours. We are also grateful to volunteers that get the animals to and from their appointments. And we are super grateful to everyone that supports us through your donations.

But who we are most grateful for are owners like Kathi and Kenny who reached out for help as they could see that the cats they were caring for were rapidly multiplying.

We are often asked to remove cat colonies or find them homes. We don’t have the resources to do so, nor is it the correct solution. The best way to control overpopulation is to spay and neuter using TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) techniques. Colony cats need to be returned to where they were trapped in order to keep new unaltered cats from coming into the established territory. TNR requires a commitment by those caring for the colony. You need to be patient, consistent, and diligent. We don’t have the manpower to do all the work it requires to TNR a colony, but we can assist those who contact us. If you’re willing to do the work, it will be so worth the effort.

Today’s effort was an awesome first step in getting Kathi and Kenny’s cat situation under control because we were able to neuter two males and spay three females. Those three females alone could have doubled the colony size in a matter of months if they had not been spayed! We have more steps to follow to get their colony under control, but it can be done. 🐾❤️
