We have sad news: our Conservation Tour tomorrow is cancelled and will have to be rescheduled to later this fall.

We hope you all still enjoy the weather this weekend. There are plenty of spaces to go out in nature and see native flowers and gardens! And plenty of Conservation Tours coming up this June!

Come explore a home garden in Macomb "straight out of a storybook!"

Patrick and Mercedes Heles bought their home from two former horticulturists. Come hear their story of how they maintain their "secret garden" with a focus on low-impact gardening.

The Conservation Tours are a great way to learn from fellow community members about how to grow native plants at home. A little bird says there may also be tea and sweet treats as well at this garden tour...

Summer is almost here! But you still might be able to find a few of these spring ephemeral flowers. Especially at Wigwam Hollow Bird Sanctuary where these have all been spotted before!

Let us know how many of these native species you can find!

If you visit Wigwam Hollow Bird Sanctuary, here are some birds you might be able to see at the bird feeder station!

Our program coordinator took these photos on Thursday. Other birds commonly seen there right now include Indigo Buntings, Goldfinches, and Turkey Vultures. If you're lucky, bald eagles like to visit the bird sanctuary as well.

May is also Mental Health Awareness Month. Spending time in nature is shown to improve mood and reduce stress. Just one of the many ways nature provides abundance and reciprocity for us. So go outside for a few minutes this weekend, whether at one of our public properties, a local park, or even your yard!

Shout out to volunteers from United Community Bank and our PLC Community for showing up for birds yesterday!

Our annual "save the tree" effort at Wigwam Hollow Bird Sanctuary was a success. Volunteers w**ded around our native tree plantings, protecting the growth of new bird habitat at the sanctuary.

"These invasive w**ds will outcompete our tree plantings. Which we need for new bird and bat habitat," explained Kirsten, our stewardship coordinator.

Folks gathered up lots of invasive honeysuckle, yanking it up by the roots. This plant can quickly replace all of our native species, creating a monoculture of one plant that doesn't provide the right food or shelter for our native wildlife.

Someday, the native trees planted by volunteers several years ago will become towers in the canopy. And home for our native birds and bats.

We're sure the White Breasted Nuthatch, House Finch, and Rose Breasted Grosbeak, and thank you as well! (ID of the birds in the photo order of appearance)

Important calendar note for next week! Our office will be closed next Monday for the federal holiday.

We hope you take the opportunity to get outside this weekend. Spending time in nature boosts mood, reduces stress, and strengthens immune systems. It's also just fun to explore.

Tiny plastic pellets, or nurdles, are wreaking havoc on our rivers, streams, and the Great Lakes. Plastic pellets are only 3-5mm in diameter, and they easily wash into our waterways through industrial spills, stormwater runoff, and transportation. They also aren’t biodegradable, meaning they’ll break up into microscopic fragments that can harm aquatic wildlife and threaten public health for hundreds of years. 🌊

The Plastic Pellet Free Waters Act, or HB4418, will require the Illinois EPA to create and implement rules for a Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan to help keep plastic pellets out of our waterways and make plastic-makers responsible for their misuse of these dangerous materials.

📣 Take action now! Urge your State Senator to co-sponsor and vote YES on HB4418 to protect our water! ⬇️
