Obituary of Ivan Hatler

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Ivan Hatler, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Ivan passed away on March 23, 2026, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, leaving behind a legacy defined by service, dedication, and enduring love.

Ivan was born on April 14, 1941, in Konawa, Oklahoma, to Ivan Loyce Hatler and Alice Marie (Duffield) Hatler. He attended Anderson School and later graduated from Macomb High School in 1959. Shortly thereafter, he proudly served his country in the United States Army, including a memorable assignment in Germany.

Following his military service, Ivan married the love of his life, Joleen Hunt. Together, they built a life centered on family and raised two sons, Louie and Torrey Hatler.

Ivan’s professional career was marked by an unwavering commitment to public service. He began working for the City of Shawnee in the Sanitation Department but soon discovered his true calling in the Fire Department. Through years of dedication and leadership, he rose through the ranks and ultimately retired as a Battalion Chief. His passion for the fire service extended beyond his own career; he completed Fire Service Training through Oklahoma State University and later served as an instructor, training volunteer firefighters throughout central Oklahoma.

Outside of his professional life, Ivan found great joy in the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and especially enjoyed spending time in the mountains of Colorado and southeastern Oklahoma.

Ivan was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan Loyce and Alice Marie Hatler, along with numerous other relatives.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Joleen Hatler; his sister, Glenda (Hatler) Branson; his brother, Tony Hatler; and his two sons: Louie Hatler and his wife, Crystal, along with their children, Josh (and wife Jessie), Holly, and Jenna Hatler; and Torrey Hatler and his children, Michael Hatler and Ariel (Hatler) Howeth. Ivan was also a proud great-grandfather to seven great-grandchildren: Hunter and Kayla Hatler; Danielle and Skylynn Hatler; and Lexie, Hoyt, and Stryker Howeth. He is further survived by step-grandchildren Kaleb McCullough and Autumn Burk, as well as a host of extended family members and friends.

Ivan’s life stands as a testament to strength, kindness, and an unwavering spirit of service. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
