Yesterday we had the opportunity to participate in the Prom Promise demonstration with Franklinville Volunteer Fire Department Farmersville Fire Department Franklinville Police Department and Mercy Flight.

Prom promise is a pledge that high school students make to stay clear of impaired or distracted driving on prom night. Local first responders put on a demonstration of what can happen when you drive distracted or impaired. Yesterday we simulated a two car motor vehicle accident and showed students the process of patient extrication, patient care, and the consequences of distracted or impaired driving. Lastly for EMS week we would like to thank EMT-B Clayton Willover. Clayton has been with the Machias Fire Department for 15 years. He came to us from the Portville Fire Department as an EMT. He just recertified his emt card last July (2025) Thank you Clayton for all you do for us!

Also today as we wrap up EMS week, we wanted to praise our current EMS students. These students are in the current EMT-B class.

Riley Ruhland - Pioneer Central EMT Class

Katelynn Draper - Delevan FD EMT Class

These students have been working tirelessly to become an EMT, in fact Riley and Savannah have already taken their NYS Practical Exam for their class, passed it and are scheduling their written exam. We appreciate their efforts to become the next generation of EMTs. Thank you girls!

As we wrap up EMS week, we here at the Machias Fire Department want to say a special thank you to our drivers and helpers! Whether it’s driving the ambulance or helping with patient care, they never hesitate to jump right in and help out where they can! Thank you drivers and helpers!

Today our spotlight for EMS week is EMT-B Miranda Rodriguez. Miranda joined the Machias Fire Dept. in 2024. Her reasoning for joining was her desire to serve her community. With a background in nursing, she decided to become an EMT, taking the first class she could get into with her son (EMT Schaus who we featured earlier in the week) and passed in July of 2025. We appreciate Miranda for her wealth of knowledge and experience, providing amazing patient care! Thank you for everything you do Miranda!

Our spotlight today for ems week features EMS Lieutenant Skylar Kadin. Skylar joined the fire department in 2019 with a fervor to learn the trade. Once becoming a senior member, he attained his EMT-B certification (July 2025). Skylar continues to be a light for the ems squad, and is always looking for ways to help our department stay current in the field. Thank you, Skylar for putting your community first! Today for EMS week we’re featuring EMS Captain Stephanie Valento!

Stephanie joined the fire dept. a few years ago without a clue what to do! All she knew is that she wanted to fill in and help where she could and at the time, that was EMS. She took her EMT class and passed with flying colors. (Probably helped that she used to be a nurse). Stephanie has been a HUGE asset to the department as for the past few years, was the primary EMT most of the time. Not only that, she helped bring up the rest of our current EMTs. We love ya Stephanie! Thank you for everything you have done for us and will continue to do!

This week is National EMS Week. Throughout the week we will show off the emts of the Machias Fire Dept.

This is Cayden Schaus. He joined the Machias Fire Dept as a junior firefighter back in 2023. He was been very involved in the dept. since he joined… helping out where he can, taking in everything he can. Taking all the classes he can. Having always shown a strong passion for EMS, Cayden stepped up the moment he was old enough last year to take the EMT course. He absolutely crushed it and has quickly become one of our top EMS responders!

We are so grateful for Cayden and our entire EMS team. From answering late-night ambulance calls and keeping the rigs restocked and ready for calls to providing the absolute best patient care possible—thank you for all you do!
