Aurora Girl Scout Troop 91282 recently earned their Bronze Award. As a prerequisite to earn the Bronze Award, the girls also earned the Junior Aide Leadership award. They created and led a Girl Scout meeting for a group of Daisy Scouts. The Daisies were able to earn a Petal Badge as a result.
The Girl Scouts completed a Take Action project that focused on spreading kindness, inclusion, and friendships among students. They had learned that Miller Elementary in Aurora was looking for a way to help their students learn about how to make friends, be kind, and include each other on their playground. The girls decided that they would like to donate a “Buddy Bench” to the schools’ playground. A “Buddy Bench” is a welcoming spot for any student looking for a friend to play with.
The Girl Scouts met with the school principal about their ideas and also talked to the school counselor at the school about the need for the bench and how it would be helpful to their playground. The school wanted a beanch that weather-resistant, as well as eco-friendly. They were able to work with a local company in Akron that sold these type of benches. The bench they bought is made from recycled milk cartons-over 600 of them! They had the words “Buddy Bench” engraved on the bench, so students can know what it is meant to be.
To fund this project they needed to raise $500. They created a money earning project by partnering with a local bakery, Evexia, to make Cake Pops they could sell. They were able to go to the bakery kitchen and had fun making 200 cake pops from start to finish!
They were able to partner with Aurora Parks and Recreation Department to set up a concession stand to sell cake pops at a large community event. The girls made flyers and put them around the school to encourage others to come to the event and support their cause.
The girls were invited to come and meet with the kindergarten students and read a story to them about Buddy Benches. Additionally, they were invited to go to the playground with the students and show them the bench and how they can use it to make friends, be kind and inclusive of others.
These Girl Scouts spent 3 months and over 20 hours on this project. There is no doubt that their time, dedication, and caring spirit will make a lasting impact on Miller Elementary students now, and for many years to come!
Amazing job, Troop 91282! 🫶 💗
