SOUTH COBB LIONS CLUB The South Cobb Lions have been serving our community since 1952. Our MOTTO: "WE SERVE". Promoting South Cobb Lions. Annual PECAN SALES in November & December.

We focus on the Lions Club Intl Global Causes including vision care, diabetes awareness, hunger relief, childhood cancer care, humanitarian, youth & the environment. Locally, we aid in eye examinations and glasses for the needy through partnerships with local Optometrists and The Georgia Lions Lighthouse. We also support the Peace Poster Contest by Lions International in area Middle Schools. We support the State by giving to the Georgia Lions Lighthouse Foundation. Our biggest fundraiser is our Annual WHITE CANE DAY where all funds collected go directly to services. We also support the Georgia Lions Camp for the Blind in Waycross, GA. We also support LEARNING ALLY (recording for the blind in Athens). International: Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF) - Melving Jones Fellowships, Melvin Jones the founder of the Lions Clubs. Others: Leader Dog, Rochester, Michigan and Southern Guide Dogs, Florida which trains dogs for use by the vision impaired persons. SOUTH COBB LIONS CLUB FUNDS THE SERVICES TO THE SOUTH COBB COMMUNITY AS FOLLOWS: Annual October BBQ at the MABLE HOUSE in conjunction with the STORY TELLING. Annual WHITE CANE DRIVE - which we collect donations through bucket brigades at local businesses and letter donation request to friends - membership of the South Cobb Lions.

We extend our sincere appreciation to the First Christian Church of Mableton (FCCM) for hosting this year’s Faith & Blue celebration honoring our courageous law enforcement officers. Due to the threat of severe weather, the event—originally planned as a unity walk/parade featuring the Pebblebrook High School Marching Band—was moved indoors to the church sanctuary.

Members of the Mableton Pastors Collective, including FCCM Executive Minister Barry Smith, Vision for Souls Pastor Kendall, FCCM Pastor Andy Daniell, and Vision for Souls’ Kelleita Thurman, offered powerful and heartfelt prayers for our officers and for the entire Mableton community.

FCCM's Barry shared the national history and impact of the Faith & Blue movement, noting that 236 Faith & Blue events are scheduled across Georgia this year. This makes Georgia the second highest state behind Tennessee with the number of celebrations.

Atlanta Detective and Vision For Souls Church member, Kelleita Thurman delivered a moving reflection on why she launched the Faith & Blue initiative in Mableton in 2020. She reminded us of her guiding principles: “All Souls Matter” and “Blessed are the Peacemakers.”

Precinct Two's Captain Piper spoke about her extensive background, including service in the Gang and Homicide Units and assignments throughout Cobb County—every district except Kennesaw. Several speakers, including Captain Piper, were proud graduates of McEachern High School.

The spirit of the gathering was unmistakable: everyone in attendance deeply values and supports our law enforcement heroes.

Edward Phillips from the City of Refuge was the featured speaker at the Atlanta Lions Club meeting. He told us how the nonprofit was founded by Pastor Bruce Deel who was sent to this area of Atlanta as a six month temporary assignment. Once he saw the immense need in the community, he stayed permanently.

Did you know that if you are born in poverty in Atlanta, you only have a 4% chance of escaping poverty? If the same people are provided with the proper education, job training, health training, financial literacy and temporary housing, they have a 93% chance of escaping poverty. At the City of Refuge, you are given that opportunity with an Individual Service Plan (ISP) tailored for each guest with a goal of transitioning to independent living.

In 2025, there were almost 14,000 housing requests. Less than 1,000 people were housed. They have a certified school on their eight acre facility for the 165 kids from kindergarten to twelfth grade.

All residents receive three hot meals a day, medical services, mental health counseling, school/job training. Last year 607 guests were placed into jobs. Recently, a small grocery store was constructed.

The most impressive statistic is that there was zero recidivism. The City of Refuge is doing wonderful work getting people out of poverty. Please check out their website at cityofrefuge.org to learn more.

The Atlanta Lions Club b hosted a terrific meeting at the American Legion. During their meeting, they reviewed many of their September projects such as the Ironman Competition in Chattanooga, the Sandwich Project where they assembled 1,000 sandwiches for distribution to impoverished areas of Atlanta, their eyeglass cleaning at the Lighthouse “Service & Social”.

They also discussed upcoming projects such as a vision clinic in Columbus, GA, European Youth Exchange Conference and City of Refuge school vision screening.

They had a couple of visitors including a former youth exchange student and Zone A Chairman Barry Krebs.

A big highlight of the meeting was Jim Jarrell earning his Mission 1.5 Chevron for sponsoring two new Lions.

Afterwards, we were treated to an excellent presentation by Edward Phillips with the City of Refuge.

Lions Club International Representatives and sponsors attended the Georgia Lions Lighthouse follow up with the students who failed the screenings from Lions earlier in the week. They witnessed the students choosing their own eyeglass frames. They also had an opportunity to see screenings for students who were missed early in the week. They were also treated to a very nice tour of Bunche Middle School by Nurse Rachael. We made a special point of showing the sponsors our sincere appreciation for their support.

The Evening In The End Zone hosted by the Georgia Lions Lighthouse at the College Football Hall of Fame was a fantastic event for everyone who attended—especially football fans. This fundraiser helps pay for the wonderful work providing eyeglasses and eye surgeries that Lighthouse provides to people in need.

Guests enjoyed a silent auction, live auction, raffle for a choice of luxurious vacations (won by Past International President, Jim Ervin), sponsorships, and many other ways to contribute to this terrific organization. After a superb reception on the third floor of the College Football Hall of Fame, attendees were treated to a delicious dinner and an incredible presentation.

Emcee Jeff Dantzler--joined by Kevin Butler, Bob Hope and David Epps--guided the audience through the Peach Bowls humble beginnings and its rise to one of the nation's top bowl games. Over the years, the Peach Bowl have been kind enough to include Lions Club International as a valued partner.

A heartfelt moment came from Johnson & Johnson’s Kinsey Erwin, who fought to be their representative to the Lighthouse because she had undiagnosed vision problems when she was in school. Once her eyesight was corrected, her grades improved dramatically, eventually leading to her graduation from Georgia Tech. Her testimoney highlighted the life-changing impact of accessible eye care.

Following Kinsey's touching speech, the following distinguished presenters recognized several worthy honorees:
-Lions Club International Past International Director Kimbra Smith honored Learn4Life-The Atlanta Vision Project with the Grace Clower Community Partner Award for bringing together nonprofits dedicated to detecting and offering solutions to the visually impaired youth in our community.
-Barbara Dooley presented the Vince Dooley Leadership Award to the Warwick Dunn Foundation who mentors and helps single parents with down payments on first home purchases. He was raised by a single mother who lost her life when he was 18 years old. As the oldest of the five siblings, he assumed the responsibilities of caring for them. He has experienced firsthand the struggles of raising kids and paying the bills. His foundation also teaches financial literacy and awards scholarships to our youth.
-Cheryl C. Lee (the daughter of George Crumley) recognized Delta Airlines with the George Crumley Vision for the Future Award. She shared an incredible story about her father coordinating transport of a rare medicine--moving it from the CDC in Atlanta to Delta Airlines, then to Pan Am Airlines-within 36 hours in time to save the life of a child in South America. Delta Airlines has been a great partner to the Peach Bowl and the GA Lions Lighthouse for many years.
-Lions Past Council Chairman for Georgia and GA Lions Lighthouse Board Chairman, Dennis Chapman, presented the Lighthouse Beacon Of Hope Award to Thomas Eye Group for their nonprofit partnerships, volunteer efforts and community outreach. He also took a moment to recognize the GA Lions Lighthouse staff who work tirelessly to provide eyecare throughout the year and their very hard to preparing for this fundraiser.

The evening was concluded with very generous surprise donations from Delta Airlines and Kia Motors. Thanks to the support of sponsors, staff, volunteers, and Lions across the state, the Georgia Lions Lighthouse raised over $545,000 to help serve the visually impaired throughout Georgia!

We deeply appreciate everyone who made this remarkable night possible.

The South Cobb Lions Club’s featured presenter at Monday’s meeting was Aimee Maxwell who is the Deputy District Attorney in the Conviction Integrity Unit in the Office of the Fulton County District Attorney with whom our South Cobb Lion and retired judge, Graham Jagger is a volunteer.

Did you know that a friend is doing something wrong and you are participating (or simply present), you are as guilty as your friend if a crime is committed? For instance, if you accompany a friend to a drug deal that goes bad and someone gets killed, you could get prosecuted for murder even if you did not have a weapon. It is called accomplice liability. Aimee wishes that every youth in Fulton County and beyond were aware of this fact.

Her Conviction Integrity Unit was formed in 2024 to:
1. Review past cases to make sure that the trial was conducted properly.
2. Review past cases to ensuring that the sentencing was fair.

She receives many cases to review. After am initial screening, she selects the the cases to be reviewed. She sends the cases to a large panel of volunteers made up of former judges (such as Lion Graham), former law enforcement and even regular citizens (such as people who would be called to jury duty) to read through the transcripts to make sure that the case was handled correctly. They conduct Zoom meetings to discuss the cases. If something is flagged, Aimee follows up for more information to see if they are a match for the Early Re-Entry Program. So far, they have been able to reduce sentences for nine (9) convicted criminals who do not pose a danger to society.

One example was a former drug addicted pr******te who was present while her “John” committed a murder. She was also convicted for first degree murder. After her case went through the Zoom panel and Aimee contacted her references including the prison warden of the Prison who gave her an exemplary recommendation, Aimee was able to her sentence reduced to manslaughter. The former drug addicted pr******te is now living a productive life working in a rehab facility mentoring young ladies who are at risk... Another example was a young man who is now working as a fire fighter.

The Fulton County CIU is one of only 100 in the whole country and one of only two (the other being in New York) that works with people who have been released from their sentence and helps them lead a productive life after jail. However, like Cobb County D.A. Sonya mentioned, reviewing horrific crimes day after day takes a mental toll. Fulton County takes measures to assist their employees with mental health support. We very much appreciate Aimee and Lion Graham for their dedicated service.

The Atlanta Metro, East Cobb, Atlanta Latino and South Cobb Lions joined forces to screen the vision of 508 students at Bunche Middle School in Atlanta. The GA Lions Lighthouse was there to conduct even further testing on the students who failed the initial vision screenings. The students will be diagnosed with a eyeglass prescription and be able to choose their eyeglass frames. The completed eyeglasses will be returned to the school within a couple of weeks.

The South Cobb Lions Club was honored to welcome Cobb County District Attorney Sonya Allen to our meeting, along with guests Cliff, Louis, and Justice. D.A. Sonya shared valuable insights about the Community Engagement Department, Special Victims Unit, Narcotics Unit, White Collar Crime Unit, and other divisions. Her office has collected over $10 million in owed child support for children. She highlighted the Family Justice Center, which supports survivors of violent crime, and noted that the Red Bud Tree serves as a symbol of strength and perseverance. Mental health is a top priority for the department, given the emotional toll of these challenging cases. There are 34 chaplains who regularly visit the office to provide support. We deeply appreciate the dedication of D.A. Sonya and her team in keeping our community safe.

In addition, at the District 18L Rally, we were given updates on the important organizations that we support such as the GA Lions Lighthouse, the GA Lions Camp and Leader Dog.

PCC, DG Dennis provided the GALions Lighthouse updates by telling us about the equipment that was already purchased by the grant that our district sponsored. He read us a very touching letter written by a teacher expressing her thanks to PDG Vanessa Stanley and Lighthouse Lions Liaison Amy Andrews about how her students lives have benefited from the vision screenings and eyeglasses. Dennis informed us that over 10,000 pairs of recycled eyeglasses have been shipped to under developed countries last year. He gave us updates on how much money has been raised already by the Evening In The End Zone fundraiser. He concluded with a heartwarming video of a student receiving new eyeglasses at Toomer Elementary School in Atlanta filmed by Fox News. 1st VP Becky Jarrell with the Atlanta Lions Club told us about her trip to Leader Dog’s Detroit, MI headquarters for their annual meeting. She was surprised to see Lions from the Villa Rica and Carrollton Lions Clubs who were also there to accept their Top Dog awards. She encouraged the remaining clubs in the district to strive for that award as well.

Dennis also resented the GA Lions Camp updates. He wants all of our clubs to support their 50th Anniversary Fundraiser. There are lots of areas where the camp needs renovation. He also encouraged our clubs to sponsor children who cannot afford to pay the $1,200 to attend the camp for a week. Last year, the Marietta, North Cobb and South Cobb Lions combined their resources to send a young man to the camp. If you have never been to the camp, the Grace Clower Leadership Retreat is a great way to get familiar with the camp while learning about Lionism and leadership skills.

PDG David White and Lion Frank Hinton presented a US President trivia session as the Tail Twister. Some of the questions were very difficult. Fines were paid for all wrong answers.

Our service project at the meeting was writing Christmas Cards for residents of an assisted living facility.

We also got updates on the following:
-USA/Canada Leadership Forum was a great learning experience for everyone who attended. The next one is nearby in Huntsville, AL. There are scholarships for first time attendees.
-The Dinner In The Dark fundraiser hosted by the Villa Rica and Carrollton Lions Clubs raised over $25,000 for the visually impaired.
-The Paulding Lions Club Informational meeting will be on October 20th. Please contact David Crawford if you are interested in attending.
-The Jasper Lions Club was selling raffle tickets to raise money for diabetes awareness. Did you know that Pickens County is the top county in GA for amputations due to diabetes?

Everyone very much appreciated the wonderful facility and hospitality provided by the Marietta and East Cobb Lions Clubs at the beautiful East Cobb United Methodist Church.
