The Chinese American Lions Club hosted a fun filled fundraiser complete with food and entertainment. Many Lion dignitaries from clubs throughout the Atlanta area turned out to show their support.

During our Breakout Training Session we were advised to ask three questions prior to a club visit:
1. Where am I going?
2. Why am I going there?
3. What do we expect to accomplish?
The District Governor should provide the team with a Talking Sheet that includes the topics for discussion so that everyone is on the same page eliminating confusion.

We spent time on improving on Action Plans. Please be aware that changes are expected to be made to Action Plans based on unexpected variables.

When assigning officers, please consider knowledge, skill and attitude.

We conducted role plays practicing the techniques that we learned.

Good ideas that we heard included a “just ask one” campaign, partnering clubs who are poor at reporting with clubs that do a good job reporting and a “fast start” initiative.

The Mission 1.5 Sessions included am emphasis on community partnerships. One story described a Lions Club from Milwaukee joined together with another nonprofit. Each organization benefitted. The younger group had the computer skills and energy to execute while the seasoned group had the wisdom and connections to organize their joint efforts.

Come Together Clubs only require a one-time $300 fee payable within 90 days of the formation of the Join Together Club. Both clubs must be 501c3 foundations. The benefits include additional manpower, Lions Club has $1 million in insurance as well as the opportunities for grants. Note: Be sure to verify the 501c3 status on the IRS website.

One Lions Club in a city with 14,000 citizens went to the IRS website and identified 30 foundations in three nearby zip codes. They were able to join together with several of these foundations to provide stronger service to their community. The Lions Clubs handle the treasury duties.

The Lions were able to take a drumming non profit promoting mental health issues to form a specialty club. New Specialty Clubs can qualify for a $750 grant.

Other success stories included a Denver Lions Club who paid the first year fees and dues for new Lions. They recruited 22 new Lions due to this new policy. Retention has been good too.

Lion Randi told us about her club’s succession planning by assigning new members a position on a committee within 90 days. They also focus on teaching orientation and core values to new Lions within 90 days. They also assign a Guiding Lion to each Zone.

The final session for Saturday concerned applying for LCI grants. Did you know that 70% of all grants were approved last year? Your MD Council Chair must be copied on all grant submissions. Please refer to LCI.Org for specific instructions and deadlines.

Attendees were encouraged to apply for service carnivals, service pop-ups and even Facebook boosts for these events. Non Lions must be invited to these events. By the way, a Service Pop-Up PowerPoint presentation is on the LCI website.

It was also recommended that we apply for grants to start and grow new clubs. We were also informed that there are New Club Consultants which can be contacted through the LCI Member Resource Center.

There are also four New Voices Grants that are available.

Everyone at the Mission 1.5 Momentum Session: Action = Impact had fun while learning some valuable lessons. Words such as “amazing”, “awesome” and “yip yo” were used to fire up the audience. Top Lion officers shared examples of creative projects tree planting in a forest that was devastated by fire. Another clever project included handing out neon safety belts and cards with safety instructions to people jaywalking on busy roads.

A club in Nebraska provides families with kids in pediatric centers with gas gift cards. Another club. Another club provides kids going through chemo with hand sewn yarn hats.

A Virginia club provides hearing testing. A club provides lion dolls with a small shirt that reads “you are loved” to first responders to give to children who experience trauma. One club fills backpacks full of school supplies and hygiene items for foster kids. Another club in a dry region of the US drills wells for water.

The possibilities are endless if you look for needs in your community.

As the new District 18L Global Membership Team representative, Lion Barry was fortunate enough to be invited to the Mission 1.5 Summit at the Hilton in downtown Atlanta. He has already picked up some great ideas such as dressing like a team at public events to gain visibility which leads to awareness which creates trust.

One club gave a free membership to a media expert in return for a free website and social media advice.

To help with retention, ask these questions:

1. Do you feel like you are part of a group
2. Does the community like your projects?
3. Are your needs being met?
4. Are you having fun?

Insist that your club members “like” and “share” your social media posts.

Google your club to see what potential Lions would see if they Googled your club. Create a Google Business page that allows nonprofits with the specifics of your club.

When recruiting a new member, ask probing questions such as “What is your passion?”, “What brought you here?”, and “Tell me more.”.

It is very important to inspire through marketing. Every club needs a Marketing Director.

Our South Cobb Lions were honored to have guests Leyla and her daughter Bahar from the Istanbul Atlas Lions Club in Turkey attend our meeting. They have lived in Atlanta area many years ago and have returned to get Bahar ready to start her college education at Georgia State. Her major will be Bio Engineering. She will also be an intern at Georgia Tech. Her future is very bright…

They talked about their Lions Club in Istanbul where they provide services the the visually impaired, hearing impaired, children in hospitals, people with autism and even have a mobile food pantry that serves hot soup and meals to people in need.

It was interesting to hear that there are 268 Lions Clubs within 6 Districts in Turkey. Their clubs do not have a Tail Twister who tells jokes at the end of the meetings either.

Leyla brought some delicious Turkish desserts to our meeting for everyone to taste. They were wonderful. It was a pleasure to meet them and we will be seeing them at upcoming Lions events over the next several weeks.
