The Clarifier Community Mosaic

The Clarifier Community Mosaic Mosaic work has completed; dedicated Sept. 2015. Work continues to complete landscaping, creating a pocket park by the St. Vrain River, Black Bear Hole.

A community mosaic art project: encrusting nearly 1000 sf of cement surface on a cylindrical tank. In 2004 the Town of Lyons turned over the old water treatment cement tank to CoCoA, Confluence Community Arts, for the purpose of transforming the dilapidated ruin into a dazzling, mosaic, tile and sandstone covered monument. In it's fourth year of surface application, community volunteers meet twice per week from May-October. When completed, it will be landscaped, creating a pocket park.

Photographer for the Denver Post, Boulder Camera and Longmont Times Call, Cliff Grassmick, happened by yesterday as I was up top weeding, in preparation for the Clarifier being on the Lyons Garden Tour June 15. He came looking initially for kayakers and tubers.
Hoping the 96 Shenandoah Switchgrass plants we planted last October will eventually crowd out the weeds.
Need to get water up there; very dry with our low rain in May and hot weather here now. They are drought tolerant once established.

Clarifier top got weeded today. Many of the Shenandoah Switchgrass plants we set in last October are still there, despite lack of May rain. Hoping the Town can get the watering truck there soon. Switchgrass plants should reach a height of 36" or more. Pink flowers later summer. Beautiful burgundy fall color. These plantlings will need a year or two (with decent water) to reach maturity. Once established, they are drought tolerant/low water needs.

The Lyons Clarifier Community Community Mosaic will be on the tour this year! Saturday, June 15; 9-1pm. Not so much for its growing gardens, but its dazzling mosaic array of birds, flowers, trees, landscapes and even planets! Please amble by and say hello. Enjoy this wonderful Lyons gem, up close and personal, just across the bridge from the Black Bear hole.

Just over 2 weeks until the Mountain Blooms Garden Tours, hosted by the Lyons Garden Club!

Sneak peek (not pictured): Lovingly planted by a permaculture expert, one garden is meadow inspired with pollinator seeds broadcast throughout. This host also showcases an array of raised vegetable beds, fruit trees, a duck house, and a “catio” for cats to roam.

Re: trash on top of the Clarifier- update:
It appears a middle aged guy in black has been building a shelter up on the roof. Leaving trash. The Town guys removed it yesterday. We are assessing for any surface damage or damage to the new plants on the 'roof'. If anyone sees any unauthorized person/activity up on top, please call police dispatch. Non-Emergencies - 303-441-4444 or 911 for an emergency. This really helps because it generates a call for service and gets a deputy headed that way. Please help us preserve and care for our Lyons Clarifier Community Mosaic! Thanks.

Sometime in the past few days, a few unauthorized people were seen putting trash items on the Clarifier rooftop, endangering themselves, the mosaic structure and damaging the 96 switchgrass plants we put in this October. Please report any activity immediately to the police and Town of Lyons. This beloved art work belongs to all of Lyons. Help us take good care of it. Thank you!

PLEASE NOTE: Only people authorized by the Town/Parks and Rec are permitted on the Clarifier roof. NEVER public access for anyone. Dangerous to them, the mosaic structure. And there are 96 newly planted switchgrasses trying to survive. I'm asking Lyons people to please keep an eye out. If you see ANYONE on the Clarifier roof top, please report it immediately to the police (303-441-4444) and Dave Cosgrove, Lyons Parks and Rec. Or Crystal L White if you see her.
