Today is Juneteenth, marking the day in 1865 when enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Recent ICT reporting highlights Cherokee Freedmen history as part of broader Black Indigenous and Afro-Indigenous experiences in the United States. It traces how formerly enslaved people became citizens of the Cherokee Nation through the 1866 Treaty, a history being more fully acknowledged through a recent exhibit at the Anna Mitchell Cultural Welcome Center in Oklahoma and a task force report on the impact of slavery on the tribe. Similar Freedmen histories exist in other tribal nations, including the Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee, and Seminole Nations.

Indigenous communities in the Northeast with significant Black ancestry include the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe, Narragansett Indian Tribe, and Shinnecock Indian Nation.

Together, they reflect shared histories of injustice and resilience shaped by slavery, displacement, and ongoing struggles over recognition and citizenship where Black and Native identity intersect in the United States.
