Bats Northwest

Bats Northwest We are a volunteer-run org devoted to conservation, education, and research of bats in Washington.

Bats Northwest is a not-for-profit organization formed in 1996 by scientists, educators, and interested lay people to help protect Pacific Northwest bat populations through education and research. Bats Northwest envisions a future where the essential role of bats is understood, where the public recognizes the vital place of bats in our environment and economy, and where all are inspired by bats’ r

emarkable attributes and invaluable contribution to our natural heritage. To this end we work to educate the general public about bats, we join with government biologists to research and protect local bat populations, we act as a conduit of information about bats, and we encourage responsible attitudes and actions in human/bat conflicts.

Become a Community Scientist!

Did you know your observations can help researchers better understand bat populations and protect important habitat?

Reporting bat sightings and participating in community science projects helps contribute valuable information for conservation efforts.

This summer we will be hosting three (3) community science nights. But you can also easily do this from your own backyard or spot you see bats at!

Every observation counts.

Meet the Canyon Bat! 🦇

Did you know the Canyon Bat is the smallest bat in North America? Even more exciting — this tiny bat calls Eastern Washington home!

These little insect-hunters can often be seen foraging before sunset and staying active well after dawn. Because of their tiny size, they are sometimes mistaken for moths! Their erratic, fluttery flight actually helps them catch swarms of insects with ease.

Canyon Bats can be found in 10 counties across Eastern Washington, including our beautiful shrub-steppe habitat. So if you’re joining us in Yakima this weekend, keep your eyes peeled — you just might spot one zipping through the evening sky!

Answer: D — About 70–75%!

Most bats around the world are insect-eaters, helping naturally control insect populations every night.

We have every reason to love these animals!
