What’s the first animal you fell in love with as a child? Bet it wasn’t a hellbender!

So, how can a life-size clay salamander help kids fall in love with wildlife? 🦎

In the latest issue of Catasus, our Co-Founder Dale Weiler shares how creating the sculpture Hellbenders Rock strengthened his own connection with the eastern hellbender and helped inspire the arts-based wildlife education programs we offer today.

As Dale writes, “Sometimes it all begins with something simple like a lump of clay and a salamander most people have never seen before.”

Last week, we hosted our Volunteer Training Day! 🐾

Our amazing volunteers explored our updated curriculum, real-world volunteering scenarios, and exciting new in-school roles.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended, and to our Education and Volunteer Coordinator, Emma Hanna, for leading the day!

Wild for Pollinators is coming to Polk County!

We’re excited to launch our first-ever Wild for Pollinators Pop-Up Club: a FREE afterschool program where Polk County students in grades 3–5 can explore the amazing world of North Carolina’s pollinators through art, science, and hands-on discovery!

📅 Every other Tuesday, Sept. 1–Dec. 8
⏰ 3:30–5:00 p.m.
📍 Columbus Library
💲 FREE | Limited to 20 students

Sharon Mammoser documented 43 moth species in a single evening, and our team had the chance to see many of them up close.

During Sharon’s Marvelous Moth tour, we learned how to identify and photograph moths while discovering the incredible colors, patterns, and adaptations of these often-overlooked animals.

Experiences like this keep our own curiosity growing and give us new ways to help children notice and care about the wildlife around them.

The dabbling ducks stole the show! 🦆

Thank you to Girls Empowered (GEM) for joining us for our Nature in Your Backyard program! We had so much fun exploring nature trails, sketching local wildlife, and inspiring the next generation of Wildlife Champions to care for and protect wildlife.

A special thank you to United Way of Henderson County and the Boys & Girls Club of Henderson County for making this meaningful day possible. We can't wait to partner with you and the GEM program again this fall!

Have you ever seen a big brown bat? Here's Dale's version, which is going to be flying, hunting for food.

And how much can a bat eat in one night? Almost half its body weight in insects, especially mosquitoes! So we want them in our backyard!

“We all have a spark in us.”

Those inspiring words are from Cassia Rivera, a Champions for Wildlife Board Director, who is doing some amazing things!

Cassia is trekking across North Carolina to help shine a light on why connected habitat matters for wildlife, people, and the wild places we all love. This weekend, she came through our area of Western North Carolina.

We are so proud of Cassia and grateful for the passion, purpose, and wild heart she brings to this work.
