π Ever wonder why multiple emergency vehicles respond to some medical calls? Hereβs a quick explanation of how our EMS system works and why you may see two ambulances arrive together.
For calls that are considered ALS (Advanced Life Support), two different medical units are dispatched:
πΉ A BLS (Basic Life Support) ambulance staffed by Lynden firefighter/EMTsπΉ An ALS unit staffed by Whatcom County Medic One paramedics (Bellingham Fire or Ferndale Fire)
π¨βπ Our Lynden firefighter EMTs provide excellent emergency medical care and transportation for patients who need Basic Life Support services.
π©Ί The paramedics on the ALS unit are highly trained medical providers who can perform advanced procedures and administer specialized medications when needed.
When both units arrive, the paramedics assess the patient to determine the level of care required.
β
If Advanced Life Support is needed, the paramedics transport the patient to the hospital.
β
If Basic Life Support care is appropriate, our Lynden firefighter EMTs handle patient care and transportation.
β
In some situations, the patient may not need ambulance transport at all and may remain at home or go by personal vehicle.
This system helps ensure every patient receives the right level of care as quickly and efficiently as possible. β€οΈ
