“Living in the forest makes you more aware of the actual danger of fire. I’d like to understand how to best mitigate the risks. [I’m] willing to help and encourage others around practices.” – Community Wildfire Ambassador

Every community is unique with its own quirks, important spaces, special people, and challenges. Without neighborhood wide cohesion and action, wildfires have the capacity to devastate whole communities at a time. This May, 12 people from 8 communities joined the Whatcom CD and Skagit CD Wildfire Resilience Team in training to become Community Wildfire Ambassadors for their neighborhoods. Having an advocate within each unique space at high wildfire risk can be invaluable in community wide resilience. “We have received many compliments and thanks for the accomplishments that have been made this year. Our community is not only safer, but also more attractive.”- Delia Alberstein, President of Semiahmoo Resort Association

In the Semiahmoo community, the dedicated residents decided to take action together to help protect their homes, neighbors, and shared green spaces from wildfire. At the end of 2025, Semiahmoo Resort Association, St. Andrews Green 1 & 2, Boundary Ridge, Gleneagle Villas 1 & 2, and Prestwick Village officially became recognized Firewise USA® sites. The work happening in Semiahmoo demonstrates how neighbors working together can make a meaningful difference in reducing wildfire risk across an entire community. Through education, volunteer effort, and long-term commitment, these five Firewise USA® sites have helped create a safer and more resilient place to live. In Ferndale alone, there are 2,744 dogs! Those dogs produce 900 pounds of p**p every, single, day! All that p**p is packed with bacteria, parasites, and diseases, many of which do not break down quickly in the environment. Yuck.

The solution? Scoop it, bag it, and trash it. Every time. Everywhere. Learn more at: www.scoop-p**p.org

Did you know that racoons have some of the closest hands to our own (not counting monkeys and apes)? If you have neighborhood racoons getting into your crawl spaces, garbage, or pet food consider ways to better secure those items or areas. Racoons can be vectors of disease to us and our pets - plus human food is not healthy for them. Learn more at: wcwp.whatcomcounty.org/home/resources
