We are here and ready to celebrate the 4th!

Join us, in just 2 weeks, for Water Rockets, Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream, and a Makerspace Open House!

Experience science in action as we launch water rockets high into the sky and make delicious ice cream using liquid nitrogen. You'll learn about pressure and propulsion by getting your hands-on this exciting project! (this counts as a Jr. Maker activity!)

Drop in before city fireworks on Friday, July 3rd to complete your celebratory evening with some making! Celebrations and making begins @5:00 PM

Launch rockets, enjoy some ice cream, tour our 23,000-square-foot makerspace, and discover what we're all about. Entry donations of $3 per participant are smiled upon.

Many thanks to the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation for their support in making this educational event possible!

🚀 Calling all future makers!

Did you know kids can earn an official Vector Space 2026 Junior Maker Badge?

Our Junior Maker Program rewards young creators for exploring, building, and trying new things at Vector Space events.

Here's how it works:

⭐ Attend 5 eligible maker events
⭐ Complete the hands-on activity at each event
⭐ Take the Junior Maker Pledge
⭐ Earn a certificate and a commemorative wooden Junior Maker Badge!

Eligible events include First Fridays, Maker Faire Lynchburg, and Vector Space Robot Combat. There are 7 events left this year that count towards earning your badge! (The cycle will begin again in January 2027)

Whether you're launching rockets, making art, building gadgets, or exploring the world of making, every activity brings you one step closer to becoming an official Junior Maker.

Ask us about our Jr. Maker Program or simply join our next First Friday Open house and Skill Share. A full list of activities for the remainder of the year is available on our site and on our Facebook events page. Vector-Space.org/events

Thanks for tuning in! Happy Making!

This is possible thanks to generous sponsorship from The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation

This month, we get to celebrate someone who brings a quiet spark to our makerspace.

Nicholas Grummon supports nearly every big project with as much enthusiasm as if it were his own. He creates intricate chess-related woodworking projects, going so far as to turn each of his own chess pieces on the lathe. He is kind, ready to lend a hand, and keeps things cheerful wherever he's working.

Over the past year, Nic has jumped in to help wherever needed—building giant chicken legs for a totally normal cardboard house 🙄, volunteering at First Fridays, joining the robotics team as a mentor to support and guide our wide-eyed teens, participating in Makers Club, and consistently showing up to make this place feel like a community.

Not only does he show up for people—he also creates refined and impressive pieces. Most recently, Nic built his own elaborate computer case using as many fabrication tools as possible around the space. It's a project that perfectly captures the creativity, curiosity, and craftsmanship we love to see at Vector Space.

Nic, thank you so much for everything you do here. Your projects are inspiring, and your willingness to share your time, skills, and enthusiasm strengthens our community every day.

Last week, more than 80 participants joined us to build and launch their own parachutes!

We're excited to offer this a monthly making tradition—imagine a summer full of hands-on family fun, creativity, and a little bit of engineering. The ripstop parachutes you created were impressive, and the launches were even better.

In July, we'll be making water rockets and possibly even some high-tech ice cream. Stay tuned for details!

In the meantime, enjoy these photos of the epic parachutes you all created with us last week.

What happens when a high school student with a big idea meets an experienced mentor?

A dream to turn recycled plastic bottles into stuffing for handmade crochet animals led Amherst County graduate Margot Marcais all the way to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Arizona!

Along the way, Vector Space member Bill Guzek helped her tackle complex engineering challenges, demonstrating the power of mentorship, curiosity, and making.

Read the full story on our blog and see how a makerspace connection helped launch an award-winning project.

Mentorship is currently available through our First Robotics program. More information and applications available on our site.

We are excited to be welcoming Aaron Fuller to the Vector Space Shop Captain crew as our new Resin 3D Printing Captain!

Aaron is already bringing fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and excitement for improving the shop and helping gear up for the upcoming Member Meetup. We’re excited to see his energy and creativity take shape in this role.

Shop Captains are an incredible asset to the space and it's members, we are so grateful to all who choose to step up as captain at the makerspace.

Welcome aboard, Aaron!

💰 Entry donations are smiled upon!

This month, participants will design and create their very own mini parachute. Choose a parachuter figurine, attach it to your parachute, and then test your creation by releasing it into the big, wild sky! It’s a hands-on way to explore physics, creativity, and fun all at once.
Everyone’s invited to join the fun! This project also counts as a Junior Maker activity, designed to welcome young creators (with adult supervision) into the world of making.

Drop in anytime between 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM to build your parachute, tour our 23,000-square-foot makerspace, and discover what we’re all about.

Entry donations of $3 per participant are greatly appreciated — and always met with a smile.

We couldn't have felt more supported or thrilled by the way Lynchburg showed up for our birthday party on Saturday—and by the way this community has shown up for us over the past ten years.

Your support tells us that our community believes Lynchburg is better for having a place like Vector Space. That support was evident everywhere we looked: in the countless hours of crafting that went into the auction items, in the incredible homemade birthday cakes, in the donations from some of our city's best and brightest businesses, in the kind words shared by our partner Peter Sheldon of Randolph College, and in the attendance of University of Lynchburg leadership and faculty.

The event was led by our Executive Director—the "Executive Director of Adam's Idea." She is the industrial-strength adhesive that gracefully holds together every partnership, meeting, committee, and event that makes this wonderfully comprehensive makerspace dream possible: Elise Spontarelli. During her address to the community, Elise recognized several outstanding friends of the makerspace:

🏆 Des Black — Service Award
Whatever the need, Des is there to help. Without being asked, he has the valuable skill of seeing what needs to be done and the competence and willingness to step in and do it. Volunteer, teacher, donor, advisor—Des fills all of these roles with generosity and dedication.

🏆 Tim Garnier — Member of the Year
Presented not only for the sheer number of times Tim has been named Maker of the Month, but for the qualities he exemplifies every day at the makerspace: a willingness to help fellow makers, enthusiasm for group projects, competence across many disciplines, kindness, service to the space, and a cheerful disposition even during the most aggravating projects.

🏆 Peter Sheldon — Partnership Award
With us since the beginning, Peter is our "yes" person. He has served on our committee since the beginning, helps make Maker Faire happen every year, joins us in supporting robotics, and regularly creates opportunities for partnership with Randolph College.

🏆 Adam Spontarelli — Founder's Award
Presented to Adam for loving a difficult problem, for being "wary of comfort, as it often signals the end of progress," and for being the boots on the ground, the driving force, and the groundbreaker behind Lynchburg's makerspace.

The celebration wouldn't have been complete without the tear-jerking, laughter-inducing speech and slideshow that Adam put together. While there is no way to fully capture the countless lives touched and projects built under the care of our makerspace, his presentation came as close as anyone possibly could. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JN8PrECNaE

Thank you, Lynchburg, for ten incredible years. Here's to the next ten! Stay tuned to see how we grow!
