We are ONE MONTH away from the time of year when you need to hide your grandmothers, hold mom's ears and duck for cover! Yep, it's robot fighting time... but there's more! 🦾🤖

New this year:
~Southwestern Virginia Robotics Showcase- Both VEX and FIRST teams will be onsite, driving and scoring
~Everyone gets a chance to drive robots created by Witch Doctor
~Randolph's Robo Dog
~Lamp and Post coffee
~Downtown location (pop in after the farmers market)

Event: Vector Space Robot Combat
Date: Saturday, November 21st
NEW Location: Lynchburg Armory

Attendance to this great event is free!

This month’s Maker of the Month is dynamic, dedicated, and deeply talented!

At the space, wires would lie like hectic tumbleweeds, just waiting to catch an eye or toe, if it weren’t for her EXTREME powers of detangling. Makers Club would be without a motivated accountability buddy, and Baba Yaga’s grand cardboard house would be sadly incomplete without its watchful eye. First Fridays would be missing her and her girls’ excitement as they fearlessly jump into new projects, often achieving great results.

Out in the world, children would be without the best costumes in town, whether they were whipped together by the dozen at the space for a school play or intricately custom-designed, sewn, and crafted for Halloween. Gifts with epic attention to detail would go ungiven, and elements of her home would go without their makerspace-enhanced touch. Needless to say, we love keeping up with this maker and we’re always excited to see where her energy will point next!

We’re thrilled to be of course recognizing Robyn Troyer! Robyn, thank you for so often jumping in to help and for adding so much to the makerspace, its community, and every aesthetic endeavor you touch. You make a positive impact in so many ways. This is a better place because of what you bring to it, and we’re so happy you’re part of it!

We had our biggest First Friday since February 2024 last week with 109 attendees! Families came out to create the most terrifying, grotesque and even the rare happy pumpkins with excellent guidance from our seasoned volunteers. Thank yous are owed to our wonderful volunteers for again helping bring the joy of making to the Burg 🧡

TONIGHT is our annual power tool pumpkin carving extravaganza!

What to expect:
🎃 One free pumpkin per family while supplies last. Additional pumpkins for 5$. BYOP optional.
🕔 TONIGHT 10/2 festivities from 5pm-8pm (last projects start no later than 7:30pm).
📍 2004 Memorial Ave, Loading Dock entrance.
🛠 Using tools like the jig saw, power drill and all the nuts and bolts you can imagine.
🎫 Entry donations of 3$ per participant are greatly smiled upon.
🚶‍♂️Tours of our makerspace from experienced member volunteers.

We look for ward to seeing your extravagant creations!

It's a train-the-trainer day! ‍🪚

Engineers from Framatome North America and BWXT are completing our Woodshop Safety course in preparation for this semester's Engineering Mentoring Program. Starting next week, this program will invite 24 students from high schools around the region to work alongside and be mentored by local engineers at Vector Space.

Over five meetings the students will experience the engineering design process in action. Students will compete in teams of four, working to out-perform their peers through engineering principles and fabrication techniques. We'll report back to share the theme of this semester's competition, and the designs that students and mentors come up with!

The Bots are Back! 🔩
Save the Date for Saturday, Nov 21 for our most violent event of the year. Robot on robot combat will take place in our fully enclosed 8' enclosed arena, at a NEW LOCATION!
In addition to robot combat, the event will feature competition robotics teams from around the region, with hands-on STEM activities. Don't miss this exciting event brought to you by Vector Space, Oldham Dentistry, L3Harris Technologies, and Randolph College 🤖

We are so excited to celebrate Jesse Hyatt as our Maker of the Month! Jesse has been a member with us for a long time and has found many ways to show up over the years. Whether it’s through teaching, helping out with a Math Marathon or volunteering, the impact he has on the makerspace community is notable.

Most recently, we can thank Jesse for helping drive several improvements to the CNC Router here at the space. His camaraderie with Adam as they tinkered away for days on the Phoenix CNC Router resulted in a brand-new user interface and linear rail upgrades, meaning a higher degree of accuracy when running the machine!

Jesse's contributions also include sharing his wisdom with the next generation. As a mentor on the FRC team, Jesse mentors high school students on the Software subteam to program their robot. At Randolph College, a long-time VS partner, Jesse is teaching a Mechatronics Engineering class this semester.

Vector Space is grateful to have you as part of our community Jesse! Thanks for all the great things you do!

September’s First Friday was rich in photography experimentation! Participants made beautiful cyanotype exposures, developed prints in the darkroom, and—perhaps most alluring of all—made their own PINHOLE CAMERAS! Sorry to text-yell, but really, there is no joy like making a camera, taking a picture with it, and developing the picture it took all in one night!

Many Junior Makers earned their Jr. Maker badges at the festivities, celebrating their commitment to the hard fun that is becoming a Jr. Maker!

We are grateful to everyone who came out to learn and play at Vector Space! Special thanks also to the The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation for making this event possible!

Baba Yaga’s traveling house has landed in the crafty hands of the Lynchburg Witch Walk! After a year on the road, with showings reaching 6,000+ visitors, we’re happy to see this cardboard home of epic proportions heading into what may be the best retirement one could imagine: standing tall for a good cause, the annual Witch Walk fundraiser and being surrounded by her own supernatural kind in droves by the hundreds.

Get your pointy boots polished for the Witch Walk on Sunday, October 25th! Baba Yaga’s house will adorn the festivities, and witches of all sorts will gather for the good of our local Food Not Bombs chapter.
