Retired Vice President of Academics, Students, and Workforce Development
Dr. Muriel Ann Brown Mickles served as the Vice President of Academics, Students, and Workforce Development at Central Virginia Community College until her retirement in December 2023. She has enjoyed a long and rich tenure of 52 years as an employee of CVCC and served as Interim President of Danville Community College for 13 months. Dr. Mickles earned an Associate degree in Pre-Teacher from CVCC, Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Master’s Degree in Agency Counseling from Lynchburg College and Doctorate of Education in Administration and Supervision from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. Her passion for education and unwavering commitment to students has left an indelible mark on the College and the countless lives that she touched throughout her tenure.
Dr. Mickles readily and frequently shares her expertise through motivational speaking engagements and workshops. She has served on several boards (including Interfaith Outreach Association, HumanKind, Alliance for Excellence, Roads to Recovery, Virginia Center of Inclusive Communities (Local and State Boards), Parkview Mission and Beacon of Hope to name a few. She also holds offices in numerous professional organizations including Lynchburg Chapter of the Links, Inc., Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Roanoke Chums, Inc. and the Virginia League of Women Voters. She continues to be very active in the community, and her church (Pleasant Valley Baptist Church). Dr. Mickles is married to her husband, George, and has three adult children, Bethanie Mickles, Esq., George Evan Mickles, Dr. Anna Mickles Koehle and one granddaughter, Xola Noelle Koehle.
She attributes her own achievements to hard work, endurance, tenacity and allowing God to direct her path. The following Bible verse is her favorite and one that she feels exemplifies her personal journey.
