Why Margaret ‘Countess’ Johnson Is A Forgotten Pioneer Of Kansas City Jazz

For 80 years, a story has remained buried under the tales of the great men of Kansas City jazz, from Count Basie to Charlie Parker. Living and playing alongside them was another legend, pianist Margaret “Countess” Johnson, one of the first women to lead a career as a jazz musician in Kansas City.

Unfortunately, Johnson’s life was very short—she died at just 20 years old. Very little survives of Johnson today: only two identified photos; a handful of recordings from a 1938 session with Billie Holiday, including “The Very Thought of You,” that display her effortless phrasing; a few article clippings; and a couple of anecdotes passed down through the Johnson family tree.

A Message from Building Bridges Productions, Inc.
With a heavy heart and immense gratitude, we share that after ten wonderful years of community service, Building Bridges Productions, Inc. will be concluding its operations.

Though we never had a physical building, our work has always lived in the hearts of the people — in every scholarship given, every performance stage shared, and every young person who found their voice through the arts. Together, we built something special: bridges of creativity, opportunity, and hope.

This decision comes with deep reflection and thankfulness. Over the past decade, we’ve seen tremendous growth — not only in the students we’ve supported, but in the community that has stood beside us with love, generosity, and faith in our mission.

We want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to our board members, past and present, for their time, guidance, and generosity.
✨ To our donors, for supporting our programs and believing in our purpose.
✨ To the artists, educators, and volunteers, for sharing your gifts and passion.
✨ And to the families and students, for allowing us to be a small part of your journey.

As we bring this chapter to a close, we are committed to ensuring that the remaining funds of Building Bridges Productions will continue to uplift the community. Together as a board, we have selected several local organizations that will receive these funds, carrying forward the mission and spirit of Building Bridges. A full list of these recipients will be shared soon.

We also hold in loving memory Mr. Mark Spain, who emceed two of our talent showcases and poured his heart into uplifting others through community service. His light continues to shine in the legacy of Building Bridges.

While this chapter closes, the spirit of Building Bridges Productions will always live on — in every young dreamer we’ve inspired, every scholarship awarded, and every bridge built through love and creativity.

With deep appreciation and love,
Janice Benejan
