This week, the YMCA of Central Virginia celebrates 170 years of serving our community 💙

As one of the oldest nonprofits in Lynchburg, we’ve spent 170 years helping people connect, grow, and find their place at the Y. As we look back through these photos, we’re reminded that while buildings, programs, and faces may have changed, one thing has remained the same: people coming together.

This week is also Member Appreciation Week because we know we wouldn’t be here 170 years later without the generations of members, volunteers, donors, staff, and families who have called the Y home.

Thank you for being part of our story. Here’s to 170 years… and the next chapter ahead.

Join us this weekend at the Downtown YMCA for Water Safety Day, a free event designed to help kids stay safe and confident in and around water.

✔️ Free swim evaluations
✔️ Life jacket fittings
✔️ Hands-on water safety activities

Whether your child is headed to the pool, lake, river, or beach this summer, this is a great opportunity to build important water safety skills.

Spots are limited, so sign up today and help your child get ready for a safe summer in and around the water.

THANK YOU to all the riders who came out for Storming of Thunder Ridge 2026 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️⛰️

This year, we welcomed more than 400 cyclists from Lynchburg and across the country to experience another unforgettable ride through the Blue Ridge Mountains.

A special thank you to our volunteers, YMCA staff, sponsors, vendors, and community supporters who helped make this event possible. Your support helps move the YMCA mission forward right here in our community.

1. Water Safety Day is happening TOMORROW at the Jamerson Family YMCA! Only a few more spots are available so be sure to register soon! 🏊🏼

2. Storming of Thunder Ridge is happening THIS SUNDAY! We can’t wait to welcome cyclist from all over to take on the blue ridge mountains 🚴‍♀️🚴🚴‍♂️

Your kiddos will stay focused on building confidence and learning how to be safe in and around water… but we can’t promise the parents won’t get distracted if the instructor needs a few extra minutes 😂

We’re also hosting our first Water Safety Day event on May 16 at the Jamerson Family YMCA! This free event for members and non-members will help teach kids how to stay safe in and around water through both land and in-water activities.

This does not replace swim lessons, but it’s a great way to introduce and reinforce water safety before summer.
