CCI is a hands-on way for you to show the Lynchburg community true Christian faith through acts of service. Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works." - James 2:18

CCI FOCUS: There are three driving principles

behind Liberty University’s Community Care Initiative: Love your Lord, love your neighbor, and leave your mark. Liberty administrators have established a strategic plan to impact Lynchburg and the surrounding communities through student volunteer service in short-term projects. These principles not only govern CCI, but they should also direct our own lives as Christ’s followers. LOVE YOUR LORD: We are called to love the Lord our God with our whole being, which means obeying and imitating Him by walking in love toward other people (Ephesians 5:1-2). Love seeks to discover and meet others’ needs. James 2:14-18 makes it clear that authentic faith is one of action and compassion toward the needy. Christ calls us to care for “the least of these.”

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR: We are to love others. If our love for God is genuine, it will spill over into loving others and attending to their physical needs; love in action is love authenticated. 1 John 3:17-18 tells us that if we love God, then we must love in action and care for the physical needs of people. LEAVE YOUR MARK: As you meet needs in the community, you will leave a lasting impression on the community, on your team members, and on yourself. 1) You will change the look of the Lynchburg and surrounding community in a literal sense through physical projects, you will also change the way that the community thinks about Liberty University and its students to a more positive way. 2) There is also no better means for building community than to complete difficult and sometimes dirty tasks with your teammates. 3) Lastly, you’ll find yourself growing and maturing as you step out of your comfort zone to serve others and become more focused on the well-being of others. CCI IN A NUTSHELL: All in all, CCI is about being Christ in our Community. Jesus left the comforts of glory to get down into the dirt, to the level of slave, to meet our needs because He considered us worth the effort, even though it cost Him His comforts and His very life. He calls us to follow Him in this manner, to have the same mindset as He did (See Philippians 2:5-8). I am so glad you are interested in the CCI! GOOD NEWS TRAVELS FAST!
"Thanks for all the volunteer work you did for my hometown and family (The Harris family in Evergreen of Appomattox, VA). I am Brenda Harris and Carolyn Totty's sister. And John and Kevin Harris' aunt. I live in Arkansas and have not been able to be there myself to see the damage. The home that was completely destroyed was the house I grew up in. It was hard to see these photos yet I am glad lives were spared and only one life lost and not to many hurt. Keep up the good work. Once again thanks to all who helped bring a little more closure to these families."

On Sat., April 23rd, 2016, CCI organized for excellence and was able to send 148 volunteers (mostly students, but also staff, faculty, alumni and friends from church) who served the community of Appomattox in Tornado relief from 7:30am - 4pm. This led to another 1036 hours of care being provided for community friends in need; the fine folks of Evergreen in Appomattox.

“Initially my intent was to go to receive extra credit for class, however, I later realized I did not need the extra credit. Having to get up at 6am on a Saturday was a hard choice, but I felt as if this would be very eye opening opportunity for me and I would be able to see God through it all. After arriving on the site where the tornado hit, it had become very emotional. . . We had the chance to hear a home owner speak of how the tornado had affected him. It had taken his whole house, but even through the all of the chaos God had managed to show the town of Appomattox that He wasn't finished. Left on the remains of this man's home was a page out of the bible. On that page was Acts 15:16-16: "After this I will return, and will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down; I will rebuild its ruins, and I will set it up; so that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, even all the gentiles who are called by My name, says the Lord who does all these things." This mans house is nearly finished in just three short months. It amazes me to see God still continuing to show Himself through it all. God is not done working in this town. I am extremely grateful I chose to go out and see God working in miraculous ways. God is so good.”

"Today, I led a group of 27 people to help a woman named Sandy. The house that was destroyed by the tornado was her mother’s house. There were also two sheds that were completely obliterated by it. I had the opportunity to talk with her a little before the team started and she has been battling her insurance company. The insurance company has told her that she will only collect 10% of what they’d be giving her. The mission began and I, along with a few other people, collected cinder blocks and capstones from the foundation of the home and placed them into the stack that could be reused and the pile that couldn’t be reused. . . She was telling me all that she had left to find: her jewelry box, in which were her wedding ring, some pearls, diamonds, and her father’s release papers from World War 2. It was so hard to think that she lost everything. It hurts my heart and I want to go back out there again with another team before finals and before I go home for the summer. Today was a truly compelling experience. I made some new friends from around campus, along with Ms. Sandy and her neighbors.

LAURA WRIGHT
"I had an awesome time serving on Saturday. It was a lot of hard work, but I was blessed to hear the story of the farmer and get to know some of the people I was serving with. I kept thinking about how a gesture as small as picking up sticks/trash can show the love of God to others. I know we made an impression for our school, but I hope that we more importantly represented our God well. I am so thankful for the opportunity!"

This is an example of what some of the teams that were working the farm fields were doing. Clearing up debris and limbs. According to Matt Torrence, the disaster relief coordinator at Evergreen Baptist Church in Appomattox, we literally stacked "tons" of wood that day.

This is Mrs King. She has some things to say about the CCI teams sent her way over the years. She is a blessing to her community and to CCI.

LOVING ON APPOMATTOX
On Sat., April 23rd, 2016, CCI was called upon to send 100 volunteers to help with continued cleanup of debris and wreckage from the 2-24-2016 tornado. The day began with prayerful dedication of a day of service in front of the Liberty bookstore. Arriving at Evergreen Baptist church in Appomattox where 10 teams were made and given assignments throughout the community. A much needed lunch break with catered food, and a second shift of continued work. Of this day, Matt Torrence, disaster relief coordinator at Evergreen Baptist, wrote,

"After I collected all the landfill tickets, we hauled away over 3.5 tons of debris for families. This doesn't include the tons of wood stacked. Your help gathering teams for Saturdays cleanup was wonderful. The last count was right at 200 volunteers.

Liberty University . . . truly set an example in selfless service to others in need. Saturday was a beautiful day and folks could have easily been home enjoying their time off from work or school. Instead you came out in force and made a huge impact in the area.

I got a call from a member of the church last night - one of the families we were able to assist - the wife could not stop talking at her work about the work done on her place. This family has been hesitant to ask for help and realized Saturday how much help they actually needed after we were able to remove so much debris in one day that they have been working on for the last two months.

Please share mine, Evergreen Baptist's, and Appomattox County's gratitude with your people. May God continue to bless you for your efforts!!!!!"

In Christ

It is so very difficult, in light of the incredible impact CCI has had in both Lynchburg and Appomattox these past two weekends, (Sat., April 16th and 23rd respectiviely) to find the right words to say or the best pictures to post on this page. So I will summarize these past two weekends in terms of the hours of care CCI provided for these two cities.

Sat., April 16th - Love on Lynchburg (LOL) Day. CCi sent out 27 Care Teams made up of 213 volunteers whcih included faculty, staff and alumni as well as students. It the period from 9am - 5pm CCI provided 784 hours of care. It is things like this that led me to say, and say often, CCI - Doing a Whole Lot of Good in a Little Bit of Time!"

Sat. April 23rd - Love on Appomattox - Unexpectedly our contact in Appomattox, nearly two months following the tragedy, asked for 100 volunteers to come help the dear people of this community. Nearly 150 students, not 100, answered their call for help. Conservative estimates of the number of hours of care CCI provided is 980. This is not counting the 70+ hours provided in Lynchburg that day through various other Care Projects (the ones CCI does every Sat!).

The combined impact that CCI had in Lynchburg and Appomattox in the last two weekends would be over 2,000 hours of care! Like I said, A whole lot of good in a little bit of time.

Hours of Care = Hours in which the love of Christ was shed abroad to needy people; where His hands and feet carried burdens and gave encouragement and provided hope.
