This week our club had the honor of being visited by Desmond Doss, Jr. who answered our questions about his life growing up with a war hero father. What we learned was how equally important his mother was in his life. Truly, the spouses and partners of those who serve our country also serve in very important ways. We are grateful for all of them.

Last month our club along with other clubs in Rotary District 7570 hosted a friendship exchange with Rotarians from Brazil. Today, Joe Stinnett, author of Out of Virginia, gave us a fascinating look at a little-known and complicated chapter of our local history. Joe’s book follows Black residents of Lynchburg and the surrounding area who left Virginia for Liberia in the 19th century — and explores the circumstances that led them to make that journey, as well as the difficult realities they encountered afterward.
