Lynchburg City Schools is shaping its next 5-year Strategic Plan (2026–2031)—and community voices must be part of that conversation.

This is a critical opportunity for parents, educators, students, and community members to share real feedback as Lynchburg City Schools makes decisions that will guide priorities and investments for years to come.

🗣️ The event includes an interactive gallery walk, where you can ask questions, join small-group discussions, and give direct input on the themes already emerging from community feedback.

📅 February 19
⏰ 6:00–7:00 PM If you care about transparency, accountability, and the future of our schools—this is the moment to show up.

Can’t attend? An online community survey will be released later in February, but in-person voices matter.

It’s been a wild budget season in Lynchburg, but here’s something worth celebrating — this morning, City Council passed the Capital Improvement Plan, which includes $60 million for school infrastructure.

They also approved the full operating budget requested by Lynchburg City Schools, ensuring critical funding for teacher salaries, student resources, and daily operations.

It’s not everything our schools need, but it’s a meaningful start — and it’s thanks to the collective effort of this community.

To everyone who has spoken up, written emails, made calls, or shown up to advocate for the students, staff, and teachers of LCS — thank you. And to those who have quietly encouraged, supported, and uplifted others doing the hard, public work — your support matters too. This is a team effort.

With a new superintendent starting soon, there’s real momentum and hope for our schools. Let’s keep showing up and pushing forward — for our kids, our schools, and our community.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. 💛📚

Update on Lynchburg City Schools: Two Key Issues

Right now, two major decisions are in motion that will impact the future of Lynchburg City Schools:

1. School Board Appointments
School board interviews have been completed, and there are several strong candidates. City Council will soon vote on who to appoint, and we’re urging them to choose individuals with a strong understanding of education and a clear commitment to Lynchburg City Schools.

Our school system is at a turning point—with a new superintendent starting and four seats open on the board. It’s critical that the new appointees have direct experience with our schools, whether as educators, community advocates, or parents of LCS students. We also encourage the reappointment of Gloria Preston, whose experience and steady leadership continue to be a valuable asset.

2. City Budget & School Funding
The second major issue is the city budget. Council is currently considering a new proposal for tax rates. Once they finalize that, they’ll decide how to allocate funds across departments—including education. We must continue to advocate for public schools to remain a top priority and ensure they do not face cuts during this process.

Big news for Lynchburg City Schools — we have a new superintendent!
Welcome, Dr. Kristy Somerville-Midgette!

I had the honor of serving on the Search Committee, and it was clear after her interview that she is the right person to lead LCS forward. With a proven track record of success both in the classroom and as an administrator, Dr. Somerville-Midgette brings the kind of strong, student-centered leadership our schools need.

A brighter future is ahead for Lynchburg City Schools — and it starts now.

📣 Big changes are coming to the Lynchburg City School Board—and as we’ve seen over the past several years, who serves on the board has a profound impact on our kids, our schools, and our entire community.

Three school board members—Anthony Andrews, Dr. Martin Day, and Tinsley—will not be serving again next year, opening the door for new voices and fresh leadership. Gloria Preston is up for reappointment, but has not yet publicly shared her plans.

🗳️ NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS
Lynchburg City Council is currently accepting applications from residents interested in serving on the school board.

If you care about the future of Lynchburg’s public schools, now is the time to pay attention—and speak up. Our kids are counting on us.

💰 Councilmember Misjuns proposed a 76-cent tax rate—but that proposal came before all citizens in attendance had a chance to speak and without a clear plan for what would be cut, what would be kept, or whether that budget would even work.
➡️ The majority of council voted not to make a decision on the tax rate last night, choosing instead to hear from the public first before continuing that conversation.

🏫 We’re continuing to advocate for: ✅ A $5.5 million increase in Lynchburg City Schools' operating budget
✅ $60 million in the Capital Improvement Plan (CIP) for desperately needed infrastructure repairs—things like mold remediation, HVAC upgrades, and safe learning spaces

📚 Just to clarify—when I mentioned the library, I was referring to renovations at the Main Library, not closures. There is no current discussion of closing libraries, but the CIP includes an estimated $10 million for those renovations.

📅 The next City Council meeting is May 13th. If you would like to speak, please reach out—we’d love to help you get signed up and ready to share your voice.

🙏 Thank you to everyone who showed up and spoke last night. Your presence made a difference, and your voices were powerful.

Let’s stay engaged and keep pushing for what our schools and community need.

🚨 BREAKING: T.C. Miller Elementary Faces Potential Closure + Rezoning for Perrymont & Heritage Students 🚨

Lynchburg City Schools' Interim Superintendent, Dr. Ben Copeland, has proposed closing T.C. Miller Elementary and converting it into a Pre-K hub. This decision would displace current students and significantly alter school zoning across the district.

Who Would Be Affected?
📍 200+ students at T.C. Miller displaced and sent to other schools.
🏫 156 Pre-K students would be moved into the proposed centralized Pre-K location.
🔄 Students currently at Perrymont and Heritage Elementary Schools may also be rezoned under this plan.
📌 Specific neighborhoods facing rezoning:

🏡 Birchwood Apartments: Currently zoned for Perrymont Elementary; proposed rezoning to Dearington or Linkhorne Elementary.
🌆 James Crossing & Winston Ridge (off Florida Avenue): Currently zoned for Heritage Elementary; proposed rezoning to Bass Elementary.
📅 The School Board is set to vote on this proposal at their April 1st meeting.

🚨 Parents and community members were NOT present at the meeting where this was proposed, and it was NOT streamed online.

💬 Our schools deserve transparency and community input. We must speak up to ensure decisions reflect what’s best for our children.

📢 Make your voice heard! Attend the April 1st School Board meeting and share your concerns. Stay tuned for more updates on how to take action.
