We are incredibly grateful to Centra for awarding Daily Bread a $34,500 grant to support our work feeding neighbors throughout our community! 💚

This generous funding will help support the staff who manage and distribute nearly 1,000 pounds of donated food each day, purchase supplemental vegetables for our daily meals, and keep meal kits and non-perishable food boxes stocked at Lynchburg General, Virginia Baptist, and Centra Bedford Memorial Hospital.

Centra has been one of our strongest community partners, supporting not only the meals we serve each day, but also the work happening behind the scenes to make sure donated food is put to good use and reaches those who need it.

We are so thankful for this continued partnership and for Centra’s investment in a healthier, well-fed community.

Big things are getting underway at Clay Street!

We’re excited to begin work on a new mezzanine that will open up much-needed space for food preparation, storage, volunteers, and daily meal service.

As ABC 13 - WSET recently shared, this project is about making sure our historic building (c. 1830!) can continue to support the work happening here every single day. Construction will take place in 2 phases so that we can keep serving our neighbors throughout the process.

We’re working toward a $150,000 fundraising goal to make this project possible, and we’d be grateful to have our community be part of it.

44 years🎈

On September 13, 1982, a Sunday School class at First Presbyterian Church came together around a simple belief: no one in our community should go hungry. They saw neighbors who too often went unseen, and instead of looking the other way, they decided to do something about it.

They served a meal. One meal became another. Days became years. Saturdays and Sundays were added. Meals Outreach reached beyond our downtown kitchen. And through some of our community’s hardest days, the meals never stopped.

There is no way to tell the story of these 44 years without telling the story of the people behind them. The founders who believed this could work, the volunteers who kept showing up, the churches and businesses that stepped in, the donors who trusted this mission, and the staff who carried it forward.

What began with a simple idea, now reaches thousands of neighbors throughout Central Virginia, 365 days a year. In 2025 alone, 309,222 meals were served. But behind every number is a person who needs a meal, and another person who helps make sure it is there.

To every single person who has had a hand in these 44 years: thank you. 💚 Happy birthday to us!
