Thomas Edison’s Mom (powerful read)

Words can be weapons that diminish and destroy, or they can be tools and instruments that create, encourage and uplift.
The story is told that one day, as a small child, Thomas Edison came home from school and gave a paper to his mother. He said, “Mom, my teacher gave this paper to me and told me only you are to read it. What does it say?”
Her eyes welled with tears as she read the letter out loud to her child: “Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have good enough teachers to train him. Please teach him yourself.”

Many years after Edison’s mother had died, he became one of the greatest inventors of the century. One day Edison was going through old family things in a desk, and found a folded letter from his old teacher in the corner of the drawer. He opened it and found that the true message written on the letter: “Your son is mentally deficient. We cannot let him attend our school anymore. He is expelled.”
Edison cried for a lengthy period of time then wrote in his diary:
“Thomas A. Edison was a mentally deficient child whose mother turned him into the genius of the century.”

“Peggy Carr, the head of the U.S. Commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, explained that “what we’re seeing is (lower performing) students … dropping even faster, and we’re also seeing students who were not showing declines—students at the top, meaning students at the higher performing levels—they were holding steady before the pandemic or even improving.”

But she stipulated to CNN that “now all the students, regardless of their ability, are dropping. That is the point we need to be taking away from this report.”

Fourth- and eighth-graders had the largest-ever decline in math this year in nearly every state, according to a national ...

Thank you Stephanie! Legacy Education Center is so appreciative of your extra effort to help our students facing adversity. Your heart for people will serve our community with new inspiring leadership. 📚👨‍🏭🧑🏾‍⚕️👩🏽‍🏫🧑🏼‍🚒 ❤️

On Tuesday, I had the chance to visit the Legacy Education Center to learn more about the work they are doing in our city. The center provides necessary life skills education, academic support, and career development training and planning.

Their work is making a fantastic impact in the City of Lynchburg by addressing the tough challenges in workforce development and barriers to employment.

“If you spend more time trying to help others than trying to impress them, others will find you much more impressive.”

This is what I truly admire with our LEC staff (Dr. Foster, Ms. Shirley, Tiffany, Dr. Mavinga, Cheryl, Sharon, Matt & now Ben Reeves) incredible professionals that are so committed to helping students achieve success. It is truly beautiful to witness their sacrificial investment and servant leadership.

Looking forward to their impact in 2021-2022!

Onward & upward!

When someone criticizes you remember this: I’m not here on Earth for someone else to define me. I am here for God to refine me into what He wants me to be instead of what someone else says I am. Jon Gordon

Vision always centers on people, not projects, products, or programs.

3 Truths About Leadership:

1. Leadership isn’t about gaining power. It’s about empowering others.

2. Great leaders succeed because they bring out the greatness in others.

3. You don’t have to be great to serve but you have to serve to be a great leader.

Thankful for a team of servant leaders who commit to serving the transformation of our students. Outcomes are the ultimate measure of impact. Onward & Upward
