“The pain of losing a child is an ever present gripping on the heart and mind. It’s looking around at children that are the age that yours would be and wondering what they would be like now.”

“I have to leave.” “There is no other choice, no hope.” “My husband and baby will be better off without me.” These thoughts were my mantra after my daughter was born. They rocked through my head, back and forth, back and forth like the recliner I rocked my daughter in. I was desperate fo...

Will you honor the memory of the babies gone too soon by planting a lasting legacy with us?

We are pleased to announce a fundraiser with our sister nonprofit For the Love of Oona. From now until mid-September, we will be selling native Virginia wildflower seed packets to families and businesses across the Commonwealth.

Your purchase of one or more packets will provide certified, professional bereavement doulas and bereavement photographers to families grieving the loss of a baby during early pregnancy, through stillbirth, or in the first year of life. This on-call support is a critical lifeline for families unexpectedly facing the death of a child, at a time when hospitals are overwhelmed or understaffed.

We appreciate your support as we work to ease the grief felt by families losing a baby. You have our enduring thanks for choosing to remember these children with the love and admiration they deserve, all while supporting our native pollinators at a time when they most need our help. As Dolly Parton said, "Wildflowers don't care where they grow." Let's grow them together across the Commonwealth of Virginia we call home, even in the most unlikely of places.

I hear this phrase a lot when people are going through the toughest seasons of their lives. Although it may be said with the best of intentions, it can often feel like a slap in the face to a family going through pregnancy or infant loss. Sometimes terrible s**t happens and it is absolutely without any rhyme or reason. Instead of saying to a grieving family that everything happens for a reason, think of some other ways you can better support them. Three ways that you can do this are:

1. First and foremost, be patient.

2. Listen to them when and if they want to talk about how they’re feeling. You don’t always have to know what to say, but sometimes a simple, “I don’t know what to say, but I care and I’m here to listen,” means a lot.

3. Ask if there is anything you can do to help. Whether it’s to help care for their other children, make them a hot meal, help around the house with clean up, or to just sit and be a listening ear, these are all things that can help support a family in their time of grief.

Pregnancy and infant loss happens, and it’s absolutely awful and without reason. Our bereavement team is here to give informative, compassionate, and comforting support through their loss.
