In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, Charlottesville Ballet and Opera on the James unite for a sweeping, multidisciplinary performance that brings the American story to life—from the nation’s founding to the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and today.

Through dance, opera, theater, poetry, and music created by Virginia artists, audiences will experience:

✨ Early American compositions and contemporary works tracing the evolution of our musical heritage
📖 Poetry from Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, and Harlem Renaissance voice Anne Spencer
🎥 Multimedia collaborations with filmmaker Phil Spinner and Lynchburg’s Pierce Street Gateway
🎶 Performances by four singers from Opera on the James’ Tyler Young Artist Program, pianist Thomas Getty, and guest violinist Virgil Moore (Lynchburg native, Juilliard ’26), alongside Charlottesville Ballet’s professional company

More than a performance, America250: Voices of Virginia is a celebration of who we are, how we got here, and where we’re headed—together.
