Dear Parents,
Reading to our kids is sometimes held up as a predictor of whether kids will become good readers or not, having dyslexia or not.

There are so many benefits to reading to kids~
đź’ĄIncreases empathy as they see the world through someone else's life
đź’ĄDevelops a love for good stories
đź’ĄCreates a shared book experience, sharing the story together
đź’ĄCalms and relaxes--why we read bedtime stories
đź’ĄEncourages curiosity and imagination
đź’ĄCan lead to fun discussions about the plot and characters
đź’ĄBuilds listening stamina and exposure to language, vocabulary

It's important for all kids. It's even more important for the kids who struggle to read on their own. They get to hear the story, the language, the vocabulary, or the nonfiction information they likely couldn't read to themselves.

But it does not prevent or cure a neurological difference like dyslexia. Never buy into a statement that your student's reading difficulties exist because of a lack of reading to them. Parents, you could NOT have read your kids enough to prevent them from having dyslexia.

Read with your kids for the joy of a good story and all the other benefits! Here's another one: It's fun to read, laugh, and cry together over a good book!

Deadline for comments is October 6, 2026
The link in the first comment is part of the public comment docket for “Reducing Federal Burden for Head Start Programs,” a proposed federal rule from the Office of Head Start. It is a proposal, not a rule already in effect. The agency proposes to replace the current Head Start Program Performance Standards with a shorter set of requirements and give states and local programs more discretion. The proposal addresses matters including class size and staffing, health and mental health services, family engagement, and instruction for children who speak languages other than English. Existing requirements in the Head Start Act would still apply. federalregister.gov

The government is asking the public what it should keep, change, or reconsider before deciding on a final rule. Parents, caregivers, educators, Head Start staff, clinicians, and other community members can comment. The stated deadline is October 6, 2026. federalregister.gov
