Bedford Cares offers financial assistance when needed, at participating facilities that provide low-cost spay/neuter services for outdoor cats. Please join us!

We educate, train and assist property owners about the benefits of Trap-Neuter-Return. Welcome to Bedford Cares, a 501c3 nonprofit started by Bedford VA residents to help provide hands-on support for the humane management of feral cat populations. Because they are typically unsocialized, adult feral cats are generally not good candidates for adoption. It's best to keep them out of shelters and continue to provide medical care, shelter, and food in their existing territories. We teach property owners how to do TNR themselves, loan them equipment, and when necessary, provide assistance in securing spay/neuter and medical care. We always need volunteers to trap, overnight, and transport cats, as well as to foster kittens and socialize them for adoption. We rely almost entirely on the generosity of our donors to pay for neutering and medical care of Bedford County's feral cats. For general information, please email us at [email protected]. To donate money, make checks payable to Bedford Cares, mailed to 1825 Island Creek Road, Huddleston. Donations are tax deductible.

🐾🐈‍⬛🐈🐾🆃🅽🆁🐾🐈🐈‍⬛🐾
Every Thursday we will spread awareness about TNR, what it is, and how much it is needed.
🐈 🐾🐈 TRAPPERS NEEDED! WE WILL TRAIN! 🐈 🐾🐈
🐈‍⬛ Bedford Cares needs dedicated folks to aid us in our mission of trapping, neutering, and returning cats in Bedford County
🐈‍⬛ Trappers will go to a colony location, prepare the traps with bait; then place the set traps for kitties
🐈‍⬛ Trappers then wait in the car or somewhere else nearby where the cats won’t see them
🐈‍⬛ Once the cat enters and sets off the trap, the trapper then rushes over to place a cover over the trap to ensure the kitty doesn’t harm itself while trying to escape
🐈‍⬛ Trapper then puts the trapped kitty in the shade or vehicle while waiting for other kitties to be trapped
🐈‍⬛ When all the cats are trapped, the trapper then takes the kitties to their home or wherever the cats will be overnighted until transport to the vet for surgery the following morning
🐈‍⬛ Kitties are fed and given water while in their traps, and they are covered and remain in their traps overnight
🐈‍⬛ Trapper or another volunteer transports to the vet the next morning
🐈‍⬛ Some vets keep the kitties overnight/so transport is arranged for return and release to the colony the following morning
🐈‍⬛ Other vets do not keep the kitties overnight, so someone must pick them up the same day and do the overnight again; then someone returns the kitties and releases them at their colony the following morning
🐈‍⬛ Some volunteers do the entire process, while we often have several volunteers working together to get all of this done as a team
🐈‍⬛ It’s not always an easy process, but we make it work as all excellent teams do to save and alter as many cats as possible each year
🐈‍⬛ Trappers also sometimes will only need to drop off traps and train the colony caretaker in how to trap, while also offering guidance along the way by phone if they have questions
🐈‍⬛ Our ultimate goal is always to help save as many kitties as possible from continuing to reproduce which often causes unhealthy colonies and much unnecessary suffering
🐈🐾🐈 Would you like to talk to one of our volunteers about the process and possibly do a tag along with a trapper to see if this is something you feel compelled to do for the kitties in our community??
🐈🐾🐈 We can also send you our volunteer application and a video showing you more about TNR
🐈🐾🐈 Let us know if you think you might want to join us as a trapper. We truly do need more dedicated and reliable people to help us in this vital part of our mission.
🐈🐾🐈 Are you able to assist with a step or two in the trapping process?
🐈‍⬛ We are looking forward to talking to you!
🐈‍⬛ We are also always open to donations towards our TNR efforts!

♥️ October TNR Sponsor Plea ♥️

We are looking for a few folks to help sponsor part or all of a cat TNR surgery for the 24 kitties we trapped this past weekend.

Each surgery and rabies shot runs us around $55 per cat, so we’re hoping to raise around $1,000 to help cover their fees.

Please consider donating a few dollars to help us continue this vital mission for the cats in our community.

🔸We accept Venmo and PayPal—
