Supported by the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, the University of Lynchburg and Randolph College partnered with Pierce Street Gateway to improve climate resilience. As a result of this initiative to reduce urban heat islands, Pierce Street Community Garden now features newly planted peach trees!! 🍑🍑🌳🍑🍑

This collaboration enhances local food security and provides critical resources to combat urban heat, creating a healthier, more resilient environment for the entire community.

We are excited to announce that Dwana Waugh has joined the Pierce Street Gateway Board of Directors!

Dwana is an Associate Professor of History at Sweet Briar College, where she specializes in civil rights and educational histories with a focus on public and oral histories. Her scholarship delves into the intricate connections between race, politics, and historical memory in the U.S. South.

In addition to her new role on the board, Dwana is currently investigating the complex legacies of school desegregation in Prince Edward County, Virginia, examining the shift from massive resistance to massive reconciliation. Her research uncovers the collective memories of the school's desegregation era, highlighting the ongoing struggles to define the significance of these policies in the South's post-civil rights era.

Outside of her academic and board responsibilities, Dwana enjoys life with her sweet and lovable 6-year-old beagle named Riley. Please join us in welcoming Dwana to the Pierce Street Gateway Board!
